Lily paced back and forth in the grand living room of Ethan's penthouse, her thoughts a turbulent storm. The opulent surroundings, once a symbol of their complicated arrangement, now felt like a gilded cage. She clenched her fists, trying to calm the anger and hurt boiling inside her. She had discovered a secret that Ethan had kept from her, one that made her question everything about their relationship.

The sound of the elevator doors opening made her heart race. Ethan stepped out, his usually composed face showing a hint of surprise at seeing her waiting for him. He took a moment to assess the situation, his eyes narrowing slightly.

"Lily, what's going on?" he asked, his voice calm but cautious.

She turned to face him, her eyes blazing with a mix of betrayal and determination. "We need to talk, Ethan."

Ethan sighed and walked towards her, removing his jacket and draping it over the back of a chair. "Alright, let's talk. What's bothering you?"

Lily took a deep breath, trying to steady her voice. "I found out about your investment in the pharmaceutical company that's producing my mom's medicine. You didn't tell me you were financially tied to it."

Ethan's expression hardened, but he didn't look away. "I didn't think it was necessary. It doesn't change anything about our arrangement."

"It changes everything!" Lily's voice rose, her emotions spilling over. "You had control over the one thing I thought was beyond your influence. You made me believe this was a simple exchange, but you've been manipulating the situation from the start."

Ethan's jaw tightened. "Lily, you needed help. I provided it. Does it matter where the money came from?"

"Of course, it matters!" she shot back. "It matters because you weren't honest with me. You made me think I had some control, some agency in this arrangement, but you were pulling the strings all along."

Ethan stepped closer, his eyes locked onto hers. "Do you think I did this to manipulate you? I did it to make sure your mother got the best care possible. Yes, I have financial interests in the company, but that doesn't mean my intentions were malicious."

Lily shook her head, tears welling up in her eyes. "You don't get it, Ethan. This isn't just about the money or the medicine. It's about trust. How can I believe anything you say if you keep hiding things from me?"

Ethan's face softened, and he reached out to touch her arm, but she stepped back. "Lily, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to hurt you. I just wanted to protect you."

"Protect me?" she scoffed. "By lying to me? By keeping secrets? That's not protection, Ethan. That's control."

There was a heavy silence between them, filled only by the distant sounds of the city below. Ethan took a deep breath and ran a hand through his hair, a rare gesture of frustration. "You're right. I should have told you. But please understand, everything I did was to help you."

Lily's anger began to wane, replaced by a profound sadness. She had hoped for more from Ethan, for a deeper connection beyond their transactional relationship. "Why didn't you just tell me the truth from the beginning?" she asked quietly.

Ethan looked away, unable to meet her gaze. "Because I was afraid. Afraid you'd see me as a manipulator, afraid you'd walk away."

Lily felt a pang of sympathy, but it wasn't enough to erase the betrayal she felt. "Ethan, I don't know if I can keep doing this. This arrangement, it's suffocating me. I need honesty, not more lies."

Ethan's eyes snapped back to hers, filled with a desperation she hadn't seen before. "Lily, please. Don't leave. We can work this out. I promise I'll be honest with you from now on."
