Lorenzo
"Lorenzo?"
I stopped in my tracks as I heard the sweet voice of my angel. I turned around to see Samarya standing at the door of the living room, her eyes searching mine with a mix of hope and fear.
"What is it, Samarya?" I asked gently, walking back towards her.
"Did you find her?" Her voice was barely a whisper, as if she was afraid to say the words out loud.
I hesitated for a moment, unsure of how much to reveal. "We are looking into it. Mark and I have some leads that we're following up on."
She nodded at my words, a flicker of relief crossing her face. "Thank you," she murmured, her voice trembling. "I just... I need to know she's okay."
"I know," I said softly, reaching out to gently squeeze her hand. "We'll find her, I promise."
She gave me a small, grateful smile.
"Did you have dinner?" I asked her feeling the bones poking out of her skin as cradled her hands in mine.
She hesitated before shaking her head negatively making me heave out a sigh.
"Come on." I led Samarya into the kitchen, the dim light casting soft shadows across her delicate features. The worry etched on her face tugged at my heart, and I wanted nothing more than to ease her burden, even if only for a moment.
"Sit here," I said, pulling out a chair for her at the small kitchen table. She complied, her movements slow and weary.
I rummaged through the pantry, finding some bread, cheese, and cold cuts. It wasn't much, but it would have to do. I quickly assembled a couple of sandwiches, adding a bit of mustard and some pickles for flavor.
As I placed the plate in front of her, she looked up at me with grateful eyes. "You didn't have to do this," she whispered.
Before I could respond, my phone rang. The caller id said Angelo and I picked up the call and walked out of the kitchen but not before pecking her head.
"What is it?"
"You would not believe who the Mexican Consigliere is!!" Angelo's voice had shock more than surprise. It might sound weird to people how we do not anything about our rival mafia but there was a reason behind it. We had good alliance with the Mexican mafia when the former Capo was alive but when he died everything changed. Within a month of the stepping up of his son as the Don; the entire mafia was wiped out and there was a new one. It did not matter to Allesandro much since they had not created any hindrance to us but one month ago, he ordered me to find and wipe them out. I remembered clearly how he sounded urgent and not to mention he gave me the deadline of two months of which I have already wasted ten days.
"Who is it?" My voice was cold.
Angelo hesitated for a moment, his voice barely containing the astonishment. "It's Juan Alvarez."
My blood ran cold at the name. Juan Alvarez was a ghost, a phantom from the past that we thought had disappeared for good. To hear his name now, as the new Consigliere of the Mexican mafia, was a twist none of us had seen coming. Did Allesandro know? Was that why he assigned me with this task?
"Are you sure?" I asked, my voice dropping to a whisper as I glanced back towards the kitchen. I didn't want Samarya to hear any of this.
"Positive. He's back, and he's calling the shots," Angelo confirmed.
I took a deep breath, trying to process the information. How was it possible though? I remember my father beating him black and blue. We were told he is dead. How could he come back?
