"Dude, I can't believe it," Seungmin groaned into the phone, his voice a mix of disbelief and aggravation. "An invitation to my ex's wedding. What kind of sadistic joke is this?"
Hyunjin, on the other end, couldn't hold back a snicker. "Well, she obviously didn't want you to miss out on her 'happily ever after'. Maybe she's got a vendetta against single people."
Seungmin rolled his eyes, tossing the invitation onto the cluttered coffee table. "I know, right? It's like she wants me to be the poster boy for heartbreak at her wedding." He paused, a thought crossing his mind. "Hey, what if you come with me?"
Hyunjin's laughter stopped abruptly. "What? To your ex's wedding? That's a bit... intense, don't you think?"
"Come on, Hyunjin," Seungmin pleaded, his voice a tad desperate. "You're the only one who can handle my mood swings, and I can't go alone. I'll be the laughing stock of the whole event."
Hyunjin sighed, the sound of his friend's desperation resonating through the line. "Alright, fine. But you owe me big time for this."
"You're the best," Seungmin exclaimed, a genuine smile finally breaking through his gloomy expression.
Hyunjin chuckled. "Just don't make me dance with your drunk uncle, and we've got a deal."
Seungmin grimaced at the thought. "I'll do my best to avoid that."
The days leading up to the wedding were a blur of tailored suits and awkward shopping trips. Hyunjin, ever the fashionista, had insisted on picking out Seungmin's outfit, and the result was something that made him feel both incredibly handsome and slightly like a mannequin. The wedding was to be held at a swanky hotel in the heart of Seoul, and the invitation suggested a level of elegance that Seungmin hadn't seen since the last time he'd walked a red carpet.
On the day of the wedding, Hyunjin arrived at Seungmin's apartment dressed to the nines, looking like he'd stepped out of a magazine spread. His hair was perfectly coiffed, and his suit was tailored to showcase his athletic physique. "You're going to be the best-looking plus one there," he assured Seungmin, who was still fussing over his tie in the mirror.
Seungmin managed a weak smile. "Thanks, but I'm not so sure about that." He adjusted his tie for the umpteenth time, trying to ignore the knot in his stomach. "I don't know if I can do this."
Hyunjin clapped him on the back. "You've got this. Besides, think of all the free food and drinks. And who knows, maybe you'll meet someone new." He winked, and Seungmin couldn't help but feel a twinge of hope. Maybe this wasn't going to be the soul-crushing event he'd been dreading.
The taxi ride to the hotel was a mix of forced joviality and nerve-wracking silence. Seungmin's heart hammered in his chest as they pulled up to the grand entrance, the facade bathed in soft, romantic lighting. A red carpet led to the main doors, and the sound of laughter and chatter spilled out into the night. He took a deep breath, and Hyunjin offered a reassuring nod. "Ready?"
They stepped out of the taxi, and Hyunjin straightened Seungmin's tie one last time before they headed in. The hotel's opulent lobby was filled with guests dressed in their finest, the air thick with anticipation and perfume. Seungmin scanned the crowd, searching for a familiar face, but all he saw were strangers and happy couples. He felt like an alien at a human wedding, out of place and overdressed.
As they approached the reception desk, the attendant looked up and beamed at them. "Welcome, Mr. Kim and guest," she said, her voice as sweet as the candy that decorated the nearby tables. She handed them their name tags and a program. Seungmin's ex's name was elegantly printed next to her fiancé's, a stark reminder of why they were here.
