CHAPTER 1:
THE HAUNTED DISCOVERY

╰──────༺♡༻──────╯

The Yamanashi Inn had once been the epitome of tranquil retreat in the Japanese countryside. Nestled among lush greenery and nestled at the foot of misty mountains, the inn had been renowned for its serene ambiance and elegant architecture. However, years of neglect had cast a shadow over its former grandeur. The once-beautiful gardens were now overgrown with weeds, and the grandeur of the inn's facade had succumbed to decay.

When Yumiko's family arrived at the inn, they were greeted by the elderly innkeeper, who had a somber expression that didn't quite match the hospitality one might expect. His greeting was polite but distant, and he seemed eager to hand over the room keys and retreat. Yumiko, a bright and inquisitive seven-year-old with raven-black hair and an insatiable curiosity, felt a shiver of excitement mixed with unease as she stepped into the inn's dimly lit lobby.

After settling into their room, Yumiko's parents decided to take a short nap, hoping to recover from the long journey. Yumiko, on the other hand, was more interested in exploring the inn's mysterious corners. She had always been fascinated by old buildings, especially those with an air of mystery about them. With her small flashlight in hand, she ventured out into the dimly lit corridors of the inn, her footsteps echoing off the wooden floors.

Her exploration soon led her to the attic-a place her mother had explicitly warned her to avoid. The attic, filled with old trunks, dusty furniture, and faded paintings, seemed to whisper secrets of the past. Yumiko carefully pushed open the creaky door and stepped inside, her flashlight beam cutting through the thick layer of dust in the air.

As she navigated through the clutter, Yumiko's eyes were drawn to a forgotten corner of the attic. There, partially hidden beneath a pile of old, moth-eaten linens, was a peculiar object. It was a headless doll, its body dressed in a tattered, once-beautiful kimono. The doll's porcelain skin was chipped and discolored, but what was most unsettling was its vacant, hollow eyes-features that seemed almost alive in the dim light.

Yumiko's heart raced with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. She reached for the doll, feeling its cold, lifeless weight in her hands. A shiver ran down her spine as she brushed off the dust, her curiosity overpowering her sense of caution. The doll's head was missing, leaving an unsettling emptiness where a face should have been.

The attic, which had seemed so ordinary moments before, now felt charged with a strange energy. Yumiko's flashlight flickered, casting eerie shadows that danced across the walls. She shook her head, dismissing the chill as a draft and decided to take the doll downstairs to show her parents.

However, when she reached the staircase, she felt an inexplicable sense of unease. The once comforting ambiance of the inn now seemed to shift, the air growing heavy and oppressive. Unperturbed, Yumiko carried the doll to her parents, who were still resting. But as she approached their room, a deep sense of foreboding made her pause. She set the doll down on a nearby table, deciding to wait for the right moment to show her discovery.

As nightfall descended upon the inn, Yumiko could not shake the feeling that she was being watched. The inn's old televisions, which had been silent all day, suddenly flickered to life with a soft crackle. Yumiko glanced at the screens, noticing only static and distorted images. Shaking off her unease, she tucked herself into bed, the headless doll now placed beside her, as if it had always belonged there.

Unbeknownst to Yumiko, her seemingly innocent discovery had set in motion a chain of events that would forever alter the course of her family's stay at the Yamanashi Inn. The doll, with its dark past and malevolent presence, was about to unleash horrors beyond their wildest imaginations.
