It all happened too fast. One moment, Liam was chatting with Louis about his sleepover, and the next, all he could hear was crunching metal, and his own head pound against the car's window before he blacked out for what felt like only a second. He felt the blood pouring from the wound on his head as he became aware again, but it wasn't what he was worried about, not when he could hear Louis sobbing from the backseat.
"Shh, it's okay, Lou. Daddy's here," Liam tried to soothe the boy, even though his own body was screaming in pain. He turned his head slightly and saw Louis clutching his arm, tears streaming down his face.
The sound of sirens filled the air, and people were starting to gather around their car.
"Daddy, it hurts," Louis sobbed, reaching out for his dad. The poor kid looked terrified.
Liam swallowed back his own pain and forced a calm tone. "I know, buddy. I know. Tell me where it hurts, okay? Help is coming, I promise."
Louis sniffled, trying to speak through his tears. "My arm, Daddy. It hurts so much."
Liam glanced down at Louis's arm and saw it was bent at an unnatural angle. He winced, but he kept his voice steady. "Okay, Lou. Just keep talking to me, alright? Help is on the way, and they're going to make it all better."
Sure enough, it didn't take long for the paramedics to arrive. They moved quickly, assessing the situation and working to extricate Liam and Louis from the wreckage.
One of the paramedics approached Liam. "Sir, we need to get you out of here. Can you tell me where you're hurt?"
Liam shook his head weakly, nodding back at his son. "I'm fine. Please, just focus on my boy. He's hurt. His arm... it looks bad."
The paramedic nodded and moved to check on Louis, who was still crying and clutching his arm. "Hey there, buddy. My name's Sarah. I'm going to take care of you, okay?"
Louis nodded through his tears, looking to Liam for reassurance. "Daddy..."
"I'm right here, Lou," Liam said, his voice filled with as much strength as he could muster. "You're going to be okay. Sarah's going to take care of you."
The paramedics worked quickly to stabilize Louis's arm and carefully extricate him from the car. All the while, Liam kept talking to his son, trying to keep him calm.
"Daddy's right here, Lou. Just focus on me, okay? You're doing great," Liam said, ignoring the throbbing pain in his own body.
Once Louis was safely on a stretcher, the paramedics turned their attention to Liam. He was pale and shaky, but he insisted he was fine. "I'm going with him. Please, let me go with him."
"Alright, sir," Sarah said, helping Liam out of the car and onto a stretcher. "We'll take you both to the hospital. Just try to stay calm, okay?"
Liam nodded, his gaze never leaving Louis. As they were loaded into the ambulance, he reached out and took his son's hand. "I'm right here, Lou. I'm not going anywhere."
The ride to the hospital was a blur of flashing lights and urgent voices. Liam held tightly to Louis's hand, trying to keep his own fear at bay. He fumbled for his phone and managed to dial Harry's number with shaking fingers.
"Harry," Liam's voice cracked as soon as he heard his husband's voice.
"Liam? What's wrong?" Harry's voice was filled with immediate concern.
"We were in a car crash. Louis is hurt. We're on our way to the hospital," Liam explained, trying to keep his voice steady for Louis's sake.
"I'm on my way," Harry replied, his own heart pounding painfully on his chest. "Which hospital?"
