Niall took a deep breath as he looked into the toilet water below him, his knuckles white as he gripped the edge of the bowl. His stomach was a mess, and he'd barely made it out of bed before it was too late. Ever since dinner, his stomach had been sketchy, but Niall hadn't thought too much about it at the time. He didn't think that anything would come of his uneasy bellyache. After all, he and his brothers were just spending the night in, and handling a bit of a stomach ache wasn't anything he couldn't manage on his own.

But now, as he knelt there in the bathroom, Niall wasn't so sure. His stomach felt crampy, a nauseous wave building with every tiny movement, like even the slightest shift would set off a whole new spike of pain. To top it off, Niall was utterly exhausted. His head felt foggy, and frustration was building up inside him, making the situation worse. Of course, he had to get sick now, right after the weekend when his parents had been away on a short trip, leaving him in charge of his brothers.

Normally, Niall didn't mind looking after Zayn and Liam. He was used to it by now, ever since he turned 15, and their parents started letting them stay home on their own when they went away for work trips or even just a quick getaway. Niall had taken on the responsibility without much complaint—he actually liked being able to help out, making sure everything ran smoothly while Louis and Harry were away. But getting sick while trying to look after two people was definitely going to make things interesting, and not in a good way. He wasn't sure how he'd manage if he still felt this awful in the morning.

Another cramp rolled through his belly, causing him to groan quietly. He sat up straighter and retched dryly over the toilet. The sick boy had barely pulled a breath in before he heaved harder, a rush of sick meeting the water beneath him. Niall closed his eyes and tried not to focus on the sour taste in his mouth as he breathed heavily and prepared for the next round that was surely coming. His heart was beating rapidly in his ears and Niall realized he had a pounding headache to add to his ever growing list of symptoms. Something was definitely running its course through his system.

Niall let out a pitiful moan as he found himself back over the toilet bowl, large amounts of his past meals making a reappearance. Niall couldn't help the tears that rushed down his pale face as he struggled to get a decent breath in. Every heave of his stomach made him want to cry out in pain and he felt faint once the awful bout was over. Shallow heaves kept him spitting up small amounts for a few minutes before finally he pulled himself away, leaning pathetically against the wall to catch his bearings.

When the room stopped spinning and the nausea went down enough, Niall flushed everything away and pulled himself off the floor. He was still trying to catch his breath, but he just needed to get back to his bed; that was his only priority.

Niall didn't know what he managed to come down with, but he was struggling to walk on his own. He was just grateful that he had his own en suite bathroom, a privilege of being the oldest. There was no way he could walk any further than that. His legs felt like jelly, and his head was spinning. Stumbling back into his room, he practically fell face-first onto his bed, the exhaustion overtaking him. He was asleep within seconds, barely aware of the world around him.

The next time he stirred, it was to someone roughly shaking him awake. Niall groaned, his stomach immediately revolting as nausea surged through him. He had to take deep breaths, doing his best to keep himself from vomiting right there in the bed.

"Li... stop shaking me. I'm up," Niall mumbled, trying to swallow down the sick feeling.

"Finally, I'm starving," Liam muttered, tugging at the hem of his brother's pajamas.
