Clouds of smoke flooded the tiny living room along with the strong stench of cannabis. Isabella sat there on the couch next to her brother, her stuffed dog teddy cradled in her arms. The fur was rough and matted beneath her gentle touch, a show of how long she had had it (which was her whole 7 years of life).
The screams and cheers of the weekly football game blasted from the television. Izzy didn't really understand it but she watched it nonetheless.
"HEY THATS A FOUL" Cain shouted at the tv, smashing his almost empty beer bottle against the already dented wooden floor.
Izzy flinched at the sudden loud noise and scooted further into the chair, hugging her dog to her chest.
"Izzy go and get me another bottle," Cain instructed, taking another hit of marijuana.
She quickly jumped off the couch - being extra careful not to step on any shards of glass - and went to the kitchen to grab another bottle of beer.
She opened the fridge with shaky hands and went to grab a fresh bottle from the bottom shelf. As she did so she managed to clumsily knock another bottle over. Her heart leaped to her throat as she watched the glass shatter in front of her eyes.
"What the hell was that?" Cain sloppily rounded the corner into the kitchen, rage engulfing his countenance.
Izzy looked at him, her eyes wide with terror, as beer pooled by her feet. Tears pricked at her eyes as she opened her mouth to talk but was immediately cut off.
Cain stalked towards her his fists clenched.
"WHAT THE FUCK!" He screamed, slapping her across the face.
Her body tensed as warm tears leaked from her eyes. She kept her gaze on the ground, not wanting to see how much she disappointed him.
"I asked you to do one thing..." he spoke, harshly grabbing her shoulders making her look at him. His voice was a low whisper, "are you an idiot? Huh?" He shook his head. "I asked you for one thing...one thing...and you know what..." he took a deep breath.
Izzy squeezed her eyes shut knowing what was coming next.
"YOU CANT EVEN DO THAT!" He screamed pushing her backwards into the glass.
She yelped as a shard of glass pierced her bare foot.
Cain sighed and stepped back as Izzy kept her gaze on the ground.
"Clean this shit up and go to bed," he muttered, grabbing a beer from the fridge and walking back into the living room.
Sobs racked Izzy's body as she lowered herself onto the cold tiles examining the shard of glass in her foot. Luckily it wasn't too deep in so she could pull it out but it would hurt like hell. She tightly gripped the glass with her trembling hand and yanked it out, suppressing a yelp of pain. Blood slowly oozed out of the wound but it wasn't too much to worry about.
She took a deep breath and wiped her eyes, getting herself off the floor to clean up the mess.

The door to her bedroom creaked as she entered and closed it behind her. She dragged herself over to her dusty mirror and glanced at her figure. A red mark stained her cheek, a reminder of what had happened not long ago. Her eyes were red and bloodshot and her dark under eyes were more prominent than she's ever seen them before.
She sighed and climbed onto her hard mattress, lying down and covering herself with the thin, purple bedsheet.
She closed her eyes, hoping that her throbbing headache would be gone in the morning. She knew she was going to have to apologise to her brother and she hoped he would forgive her. All she could think was 'maybe I'm the problem.'
