The drive from the airport to Volterra was something out of Grand Theft Auto. In the literal sense, Alice had stolen a yellow sportscar. In the less literal sense, Lucy was flying from left to right in the backseat, even with the seatbelt protecting her.
Now Bella had run across the plaza, past all the cloaked figures celebrating St Marcus' Day according to Alice. Lucy jumped out of the car and leaned against it, still a little shaken from the drive. Alice stepped out in a long sleeved coat, a handkerchief over her head like an old lady on a rainy day and a large pair of sunglasses on her face, all to hide her complexion.
"Let's go", she smiled. She grabbed Lucy and the two women made their way across the plaza as well. Fortunately, Lucy's track experience helped her keep up with Alice who was running just a little faster than a human of her size might.
They approached the clock tower and Alice broke the lock, making Lucy widen her eyes at her, "Alice, you can't just-"
"Come on, guys", she interrupted as they entered the clock tower, "It's a festival. You wouldn't want to make a scene."
He was real. The man who stood before them, holding a gray cloak that was likely meant for the shirtless Edward in front of him, was the gladiator she had made up. Lucille's lover, the man from her dreams, the man who had prevented her from ever falling in love with Carlisle.
"We wouldn't", the man next to him, who was only a couple inches taller than her, spoke up.
The man from her drawings seemed just as entranced by her. And Edward looked between them, "Oh no."
"What?", Bella whispered to him.
"I feel like we won't be taking Lucy back home with us."
"What?", Bella looked at Lucy and this finally got her to tear her gaze away.
"What are you talking about, Edward?", she furrowed her brows, "Would you mind putting on a shirt, for crying out loud?"
The gladiator handed Edward the cloak and Edward quickly put it on when a girl walked in. She had dreamed of this girl on the plane. A tear rolled down her cheek. But the girl's tone immediately threw her off, "Enough."
"Jane", Edward greeted her.
Jane.
"Aro sent me to see what was taking so long", she looked at each of them and as she did so Edward stepped in front of Bella and Alice stepped in front of Lucy, protecting the humans, in fear of the young girl. Jane's demeanour seemed to fall for a moment when she saw Lucy.
"Just do as she says", everyone heard Edward whisper to Bella.
"Go ahead", Alice told the trio of seeming strangers, then she turned to Lucy, "Don't be scared."
"I'm not", but her shaky breath said otherwise, "Are you?"
"No", Alice's face hardened.
Jane scoffed and led them to an elevator where opera music was playing. As they stood inside Lucy looked at the ground but she felt the giant behind her stare holes into her back. She let out another shaky breath and reached out to take Alice's hand in an attempt to find comfort.
Jane led them out of the elevator. They passed a young woman in a nice cocktail dress who got up politely and said, "Buongiorno."
No one bothered to reply. In fact, no one even looked at her, and Lucy frowned. She heard Bella ask Edward if she was human.
"Does she know?", she then asked.
"Yes."
"Then, why would-?"
