We stopped on the stairs going down as Drake remembered what we had come for.
"Shit!" He cursed at himself.
"What?" I asked from the back of the line.
"We forgot the others."
"What room did you say they were in? Five eighty-two?"
"Yeah, why?"
"Look at the sign above your head..." I pointed.
He simply face palmed as he saw the first number was '582' and that meant it was the closest to the stairs on this floor.
"Thanks..."
"Mhmm."
We neared the door and I was keeping watch outside, holding the .44 by my side with the hammer cocked back. I could hear new voices from inside cheering silently as the group seemed to have met them for the first time after a year.
We really should go now... I thought to myself, as I heard movement in the ceiling above me. I looked up and aimed the revolver at the sound, but nothing came; it reminded me of those Aliens games and movies. The Alien crawling around in the ceiling and waiting to strike. It put me on edge. Drake tapped my shoulder as he walked by, making me jump a little. I looked back towards the group and watched the new faces walk by. Two males and three females.
One of the girls was taller than I now was by a few inches, meaning she was about six foot something seeing as I was now six foot something since my coma.
"Alright, I'm calling the elevator, once it gets here we all get in and reach the bottom. Our truck is parked outside, you can't miss it, we'll unlock the doors you all get in." Drake told the newbies. They didn't even carry weapons, which meant that they had been the ones who had looted the upper floors and that they had been here the whole time.
"We'll need to get them some weapons if they're coming with us..." Drew informed us.
"Working on that." Drake replied. I wasn't sure how he had become leader even as the adults had been alive, but maybe it was how he carried himself with confidence and always had a plan, or maybe having the most survival knowledge. Who knows, but he somehow had been put in charge and no one argued.
Drew walked over to the windows and looked out towards the market district, a large sign that clearly read 'Indoors/Outdoors', a big store like Sports Authority and Cabella's combined. It had just about anything you'd need.
"What about the Indoors Outdoors store? Would that have been hit?"
"One way to find out...." Drake replied as the elevator doors opened and he stepped inside.
We all entered the truck and it was now more cramped than ever, but we could still barely move around. Crystal came into the back half of the large cab of the truck and approached me, pushing through the others.
"Let me see your hands."
I took the leather gloves off painfully and she unwrapped the bandages, pulling at the dried blood and the wounds.
"Jesus. Alright, I'll treat this right this time since now you're not shaking."
She dumped water on the wounds to wet it and began to tap a towel around it to wash some of the blood. Then she took one of the bottles of spray anti-septic and apply it to the wounds, which felt more like hot oil was being dumped onto them, forcing me to hold back a scream. The spray began to fizz up and then she washed it away with more water and re-wrapped my hands in clean bandages.
