Warnings: fluff, mentions of alcoholism, English is not my first language and I apologize to any mistakes. And let's pretend the song I mentioned didn't come out two years later than this timeline (I couldn't find a song I liked and that fit)

"Listen...," Steve says quietly and takes your hands in his, gently stroking the back of your hand with his thumb. "Let me take you on a date. Wherever you'd like."

You don't even have to think twice before you can come up with a good location.

"Can we go to the ice cream parlor?", you ask quietly and look at your intertwined hands with a smile. "Of course. I'll never understand how you can eat ice cream in the middle of winter but we'll go to the ice cream parlor next Wednesday. How does that sound?"

You chuckle softly at his remark about eating ice cream in December before nodding. "Sounds great."

January 3rd 1934

The second the bell rang and signaled another tiring school day's ending, you grabbed Mary's arm and dragged her along who just followed you as if this would happen every time.

But then again, being friends since toddler days, it has reached a level of normalcy to both of you.

As soon as you're out of ear shot for everyone, you turn around to her and explain your behavior.

You explain everything. From your date with Rafe at the diner over to the kiss between you and Steve and up to the point where you said yes to Steve's date offer.

Mary takes a good few seconds to stare at you, her brown eyes searching for any kind of humor.

But she soon realizes that you're being for real. You didn't make that up from some gossip magazine; you're telling the truth!

"Oh my-," she starts to laugh. "You're a naughty one! Two boys at the same time?"

You quickly shake your head, that's the last thing you want. You don't want to date two boys at the same time and give each of them hope when it's not even the truth.

No, you want to come clean. But that can only happen when you tell Rafe about you and Steve.

"I'm not dating them both at the same time. I'm confused...," you clarify.

"How did this even happen? I thought you were totally fancying Rafe."

"I was! But just when Rafe dropped me off back home, Steve started confessing all of his feelings and to be completely honest, I think there's been something between us the past year."

Mary huffs amused and drapes an arm around your shoulder, "here's an advice; go on that date with Steve and find out if you really fancy him or if he's really just your friend. And then you can make up your mind; you don't have to cross that bridge just yet."

Later in the day, you put on some of your mother's mascara and grab your warm winter coat as soon as the doorbell rings.

Opening it, you see Steve standing on your doorstep with a lopsided smile. His blonde hair is combed back and he's also dressed in a thick coat to shield him from the icy temperatures that had rolled over Brooklyn the last month.

STEVE'S POV

She looks absolutely breathtaking in her yellow dress that's underneath her brown, furry coat. Her hair is falling effortlessly over her shoulders and don't even get me started how her lips look with this lipgloss.
