"Girl, why did I see your baby daddy today?" Kiana asked me as we cleaned up the shop for the night.
"Saw him where?"
"On the corner looking like a drug dealing ass nigga." She mumbled as she collected all her combs.
"He's too old for that shit." I shook my head and then rolled my eyes. He always went on and on about how he was trying to be better but was out here selling. I've known Delon since we were teens and the streets were something he loved. It just took me forever to realize that.
"Mmh, and he had the audacity to say what's up to me like I wasn't coming to snitch." She shook her head.
"I haven't talked to him since I had to cuss him out about his momma and sister." I rolled my eyes.
"Damn, why did they do it now?
"His sister texted my phone talking about how she's coming to get Zion because she wants to take her nephew out. I haven't talked to this girl the whole time her brother was locked up. I didn't even know she still had my number."
"And she just thought she was getting your son?"
"Right, Zion doesn't even know her so I was like he's not gonna go with you because he doesn't know you and she got mad. After all that his mother called me too and I had to cuss her out."
"Not you cussed his momma out." Kiana laughed but I was dead ass serious. I didn't play when it came to my son and they were pushing it. I didn't hear from them the whole six years Delon was locked up but now everyone wanted to be on my phone.
"And did like don't play with me. Y'all don't care about my son for real." I mumbled as I felt my phone ringing in my apron.
"Who's this?" I answered the unknown number.
"Mommy, it's me." Zion's voice came through the phone over some loud music making my heart damn near jump out of my chest.
"Hi Z, are you okay? Where's your dad?" I instantly started asking him questions because it was weird he was calling from an unknown number and not Delon's.
"I'm okay but I want to come home now. Daddy left me at my aunt's house and there's a lot of strangers here." He said and I could feel my eyes watering.
"Okay baby, I'm gonna come get you. Did your dad say where he was going?"
"No, he said he'll be back but that was a long time ago and I'm hungry." He explained to me and I was beyond pissed off.
"Okay, where are you? In a room?" I wiped my face as I grabbed my car keys and made my way toward the door. It was days like this I was grateful my son knew my number by heart and knew to call me if he didn't feel safe.
"Yes, I'm in Daddy's old room." He said and I instantly knew he was at Delon's mother's house.
"I'm on my way baby. Just stay on the phone with me." I told him as I got into my car and sped to my son. It didn't take me more than ten minutes to get to the house and I sped through traffic to make sure of it.
I sprinted to the front door and banged on the door as loud as I could. I could tell from the loud music and talking there was some kind of party happening. There was a mixture of men's and women's voices making me more upset than I always was.
"What the fuck? Why are you banging on my door like the police?" Mina opened the door and stood in the doorway. The mug on her face instantly dropped when she realized it was me.
"Where's my son?"
"Your son is fine. What the hell is wrong with you?"
"Bitch, what's wrong with you?! You have my son here with all these fucking strangers, blasting music and smoking weed?" I yelled because this bitch was trying me.
"Yo, chill out." I heard before I was yanked from the door. I snatched my arm out of the grip and turned around to see Delon staring at me with a confused look on his face.
"Tell them to give me my fucking son before I black the fuck out! I'm done with the bullshit!"
"Katrina, chill out. You tryna cause a scene for the neighbors?" He mumbled and I threw my head back.
"Get off me and get my son! Right fucking now!" I screamed as he ran his hand down his face in embarrassment but I didn't care. I rarely showed my ass anymore but this time it was one hundred percent necessary.
"Mina, move man." He told her.
"That girl is not coming into my house acting like that. You need to tell her to calm down." Mina's scary ass said from the doorway.
"Bitch, shut the fuck up and give me my son!"
"Yo! Chill out!" Delon yelled at me.
"Mina move and open the door for real." He said and she soon as she did I pushed way inside the door.
"Zion!" I called walking around the house with Delon right on my heels, tracking my every move.
"Mommy!" I heard his voice from the top of the stairs making me turn around and grab his hand.
"Come on baby, we're going home." I grabbed his hand and made my way out the door. I was no longer angry just relieved my son was okay.
"Mommy, are you okay?" I heard Zion whisper and nodded my head, reassuring him I was.
"Y'all gotta stop this shit, for real. It's affecting my son and I don't like that at all." Delon walked up to my car and it took everything in me not to smack the shit out of him.
"Get away from me right now. How dare you leave my son here with all these fucking strangers. You don't know what could've happened to him with all those people in there getting drunk and high." I said to him in a low but stern voice because Zion wasn't too far from us.
"When I left there was no one there but my mom and Mina. I didn't know anything about this shit or I would've never left him here." He tried to explain himself.
"I don't care he was supposed to be with you. He doesn't even know them."
"But that's my family. He'll get to know them."
"That's your family that put our son in danger.
You need to think about this shit 'cause I promise you I will die behind my son and other people will too."
