chapter eight
"a taunt from the heavens"

Ravenna was sprawled out on Jeremy's king sized bed, she flicked through one of his old sketchbooks as Kenji and Jeremy sat on his desk playing a video game. Getting bored, she walked over towards the boys and grabbed the family sized packet of chips that laid beside the keyboard and began munching on them.

"You've been playing for half hour, when's it my turn?" She asked, she grabbed a handful of chips and leaned her head back, pouring the chips from her hand and into her mouth.

Kenji scoffed. "Yeah, no chance. I'm seconds away from beating this guys ass. Do not ruin this for me." He kept his eyes glued onto the screen and Ravenna rolled her eyes and groaned.

Ravenna's phone started to ring, she grabbed it out from her back pocket and checked to see who it was. Only for her to not recognise the number.

She hesitated before answering and brought the phone to her ear.

"Hello, who's this?"

"Your favourite person in the world."

Damon.

"First of all, gross. Second of all, how the fuck did you get my number?"

"Caroline gave it to me." She could envision his cocky face as he replied.

"Tell Caroline I'm gonna shove a stake so far up her ass it stabs her in the heart."

"Let's cut the dramatics. I've got updates for you."

Ravenna paused. "...I'm listening. I've got something for you as well. But, ladies first."

"I'll keep it short and sweet. Stefan is in the tomb with Kathrine, Elena keeps trying to sacrifice herself and Slater's dead."

Ravenna completely ignored everything else he had said. The only thing on her mind being Slaters sudden death. She pulled her eyebrows together and bit on her bottom lip.

She should've known. The minute she grows to genuinely like someone they're snatched away from her. Perhaps God was antagonising her, purposefully making it his mission to ensure she stayed miserable. She felt they were playing a brutal game of tug of war and she was losing.

She had become more of a vessel of unspoken rage rather than a person and grief had hung its hammock in her heart. She was beginning to come to terms with the fact that there will always be a ribbon of misery running through her.

It was just like her brother said. "All things ever do is end."

"Helloooo?" Damon called out for her on the other end.

She didn't reply, there were far too many thoughts racing through her mind for her to hear anything Damon was saying.

"Oh come on Raven, you barely knew the guy. These things happen." Damon didn't need to ask to know what had her so quiet. He saw how Slater immediately hooked Ravenna, he saw the admiration in her eyes for him.

"I wanted to know him." She argued back.  She didn't want Damon to have the satisfaction of hearing her so upset. And her reasoning for being upset only irritated her more. She hated how she cared. So, she pulled herself back together and swallowed her emotions.

"Forget it."

"Forgotten. Your turn."

Ravenna sighed. "Elijah's alive."

She wasn't sure why, but after Elijah showed himself to her after the window incident. When she returned back to the car, she didn't utter a word about it. She didn't regret it or feel guilty about not telling them. Which is what confused her more.
