𝐀 𝐋𝐈𝐆𝐇𝐓 𝐒𝐍𝐎𝐑𝐄 𝐂𝐀𝐌𝐄 𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐌 𝐉𝐀𝐘'𝐒 𝐌𝐎𝐔𝐓𝐇, breaking the stillness of the room. Elizabeth stirred in her sleep, her head nestled against his shoulder. Despite the uncomfortable chair she sat in, the warmth of Jay's presence seemed to anchor her.
Jay himself leaned into Carlos, who rested his chin atop Jay's head, creating a makeshift tower of support. Despite the lopsided arrangement, Jay's hand remained intertwined with Elizabeth's, a quiet gesture of solidarity.
Jay's beanie began to slip, causing him to squirm slightly as he reached up to adjust it. The motion disrupted the delicate balance, making Carlos tilt back abruptly. His head lolled, mouth agape, before a low groan escaped him. The soft hum of the 3D printer suddenly changed to an insistent beeping; jolting Jay awake.
He blinked rapidly, his eyes adjusting to the dim light as he focused on the freshly printed wand standing proudly before them. "Whoa," Jay muttered, sitting up straighter. Without thinking, he smacked Carlos on the chest to wake him. Carlos groaned in protest, but the sharp noise also roused Elizabeth.
She shifted groggily, rubbing at her eyes and yawning as she glanced around, her head tilted slightly in confusion.
Jay was already on his feet, his gaze locked on the wand, awe written all over his face. Elizabeth and Carlos followed his lead, rising to join him. Carlos reached out to open the printer door, his fingers hovering over the wand. Before he could touch it, Elizabeth quickly darted in, her reflexes sharp despite her drowsiness.
"Got it," she said, flashing a triumphant smile as she cradled the wand. The intricate carvings caught the dim light, and her fingers traced its details with care. She twirled it experimentally, letting out a soft, breathy laugh. "Not bad," she said, her tone light but impressed.
She twirled it in her hand, her fingers tracing the small details of the wand. Looking over at the others, Elizabeth smiled as she let out a breathy laugh.
Carlos nodded appreciatively. "Yeah, not bad at all."
"Alright," Elizabeth said, slipping the wand into Jay's hand as she straightened. "Let's go."
The three headed for the door, Jay taking the lead. But as he cracked the door open, a familiar bark echoed from across the room. All three turned toward Carlos' bed, where Dude sat, his tail wagging expectantly.
"Hey, guys, what about me?" the dog seemed to say.
"What about you?" Elizabeth quipped, crossing her arms with an amused look.
Dude barked again, causing Elizabeth to jump slightly. Her widened eyes made Carlos chuckle, but he quickly schooled his expression, pointing sternly at his canine companion. "No, Dude. You stay," he commanded. "I mean it. Stay."
Dude whined dramatically but flopped down on the bed, resting his head on his paws. Carlos softened, smiling as he spoke again. "We'll be back before you know it, buddy. Love you."
With that, the trio slipped into the hall, moving as quietly as possible. The cool night air greeted them as they stepped outside. Jay clutched the wand tightly at his side, attempting to keep it out of view. They had barely made it down the steps of Auradon Prep when a voice stopped them in their tracks.
"Have you seen Evie?"
The three turned sharply to find Doug standing a few feet away, looking at them expectantly. Jay quickly hid the wand behind his back, while Carlos fumbled for an answer.
"She. . . uh. . . went camping," Carlos said, clearly grasping at straws.
Elizabeth's brows shot up at the terrible lie. She glanced at Doug, who mirrored her expression with skepticism. "Evie, I-want-a-castle, camping?" Doug asked dryly.
Elizabeth smiled, recovering quickly. "You know how spontaneous she can be," she said with an easy shrug.
Doug narrowed his eyes but didn't press further. "Right," he muttered. Jay took the opportunity to usher the group away, forcing an awkward laugh.
"Later, Doug!" Jay called, tugging Elizabeth and Carlos along.
Once Doug disappeared, they exhaled in relief — only to freeze again as another figure stepped into their path. Lonnie stood before them, her arms crossed and an unmistakable determination in her eyes.
"I'm coming with you," she declared. The swords strapped to her back left no doubt that she meant business.
Elizabeth blinked. "Coming where? And with swords? No way," she said, her voice firm.
Jay laughed nervously, holding up his hands. "Yeah, we don't need swords at the. . . uh. . . Waffle Hut."
Elizabeth and Carlos turned to him with incredulous looks, and Lonnie raised an eyebrow. "You're going to the Isle to rescue Ben," she stated matter-of-factly. "Take me with you, or I tell Fairy Godmother."
Silence hung between them as the threat sank in. Jay sighed, giving her a reluctant nod. Without waiting for a formal invitation, Lonnie stepped forward, positioning herself beside Elizabeth as they made their way to the limo.
The group exchanged wary glances, knowing this mission was about to get a lot more complicated.
