Ethan awoke slowly, his senses coming back one by one. He felt the soft sheets beneath him, the warmth of a blanket covering his body. The air was filled with a faint, pleasant scent, unlike the cold, damp earth he had grown accustomed to.
He blinked, adjusting to the soft morning light filtering through the window. For a moment, he thought he had died and gone to heaven. The room was clean, well-furnished, and inviting. He sat up, noticing that he was wearing fresh, clean clothes.
Maya stirred beside him, her eyes fluttering open. She looked around, her confusion mirroring his own. "Ethan, where are we?"
Ethan shook his head, trying to piece together the last fragments of his memory. The ambush, the dart, the darkness. "I don't know. But it feels... safe?"
The door to their room opened, and a middle-aged woman entered, carrying a tray with food. "Good morning," she said with a warm smile. "I'm Clara. Welcome to Frostbury. You're safe here."
Ethan and Maya exchanged glances. Clara set the tray down on a small table. "Eat. You must be starving. When you're ready, there's a meeting in the main hall to welcome you and the others."
As Clara left, Ethan approached the tray, the aroma of fresh food making his stomach growl. "It looks... delicious," Maya said, still sounding uncertain.
They ate quickly, their bodies craving the nourishment. The food was as good as it looked, and for a brief moment, they allowed themselves to relax.
After eating, they explored their surroundings. The house was large and well-kept, with rooms that seemed to belong to a different era. They found Jacob, Diana, Lucas, Isabella,Grace and Elen in similarly luxurious rooms, all equally confused but unharmed.
"Where are we?" Jacob asked as they gathered in the hallway. "And why does it feel like we've just stepped into a different world?"
Diana frowned, her eyes scanning the elegant decor. "I don't know, but we need to find out."
They followed the instructions and made their way to the main hall. The building was grand, with high ceilings and intricate designs. Other refugees were also arriving, all looking as bewildered as Ethan and his group.
The town's leaders welcomed them warmly, introducing themselves and assuring everyone that they were safe. They explained that Frostbury was a sanctuary, a place where they could rebuild their lives without fear.
Ethan listened intently, his initial unease fading slightly. The leaders seemed genuine, and the townspeople were friendly. As the days passed, they began to settle into their new surroundings. They were given comfortable accommodations, regular meals, and even opportunities to contribute to the community.
But as they settled in, Ethan couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. He noticed that some people who had arrived with them were no longer around. When he asked about them, he received vague answers that didn't sit well with him.
One night, as they gathered in their house, Ethan voiced his concerns. "Have you noticed people disappearing?"
Maya nodded. "I have. I thought it was just me being paranoid, but it's not just a few. It's more than that."
Lucas leaned in, his voice low. "I heard someone talking about medical exams. They said it's just routine, but... I don't know. It feels wrong."
Diana looked thoughtful. "We need to find out what's going on. If this place isn't safe, we need to know."
They decided to investigate, starting with the medical facility. Ethan, Jacob, and Diana volunteered to sneak out that night and see what they could find.
Under the cover of darkness, they made their way to the facility. It was heavily guarded, but they managed to find a way in through a back entrance. The inside was starkly different from the rest of the town—cold, clinical, and unsettlingly sterile.
They found files detailing experiments on refugees, trying to create super-soldiers. Ethan felt a chill run down his spine as he read about the procedures and the risks involved. These weren't routine medical exams. They were something far more sinister.
As they crept through the facility, they stumbled upon a room where a young man was restrained, his body covered in strange devices. He looked at them with pleading eyes, his voice weak. "Help me... please..."
Ethan felt a surge of anger and fear. They had to get out and warn the others. As they turned to leave, alarms blared, and they knew they had been discovered.
They raced back to their house, their minds racing with the implications of what they had seen. As they burst through the door, they found Maya, Lucas, Isabella, and Elen waiting, their faces filled with concern.
"We need to leave," Ethan said urgently. "Now. This place isn't what it seems."
