Trying to move as quietly as possible Bob walked into his house from the back door and into the kitchen. He hummed to himself as he carefully shut the door behind him. He passed a clear plastic dome on the kitchen counter which had a slice of cake underneath it. Bob smiled and took the cake, which he started eating.
Bob next went into the living room, still smacking his lips as he kept eating. But as he walked in he heard something and as he turned around striking a fighting pose. But that was when a lamp switched on and his wife turned around, an annoyed look on her face. He looked slightly dumbfounded as a few crumbs fell from his mouth.
"I thought you'd be back by eleven," she scowled.
"I said I'd be back later," he said with his mouth full.
"I assumed you'd be back later. If you came back at all, "you'd be back later"," she said, making quotation marks with her fingers at the last two words in her sentence.
"Well I'm back okay?" Bob said, shrugging with a sheepish grin on his face. He turned around and took another bite before Helen reached her elastic arm out and turned him back around. He winced as she picked a small piece of rubble off his jacket.
"Is this rubble?" she asked.
"It was just a little workout. Just to stay loose," he said, shoving the last of the cake into his mouth.
"You know how I feel about that Bob. Darn you! You know we can't blow cover again! You're setting a bad example, especially for Y/N!" she hissed at him.
"The building was coming down anyway. And I'm not, she doesn't even know about it," he objected, not realizing what he said.
"What?!" Helen questioned making her husband wince again as she ran in front of him. "You knocked down a building?!!"
"It was on fire. Structurally unsound. It was coming down anyway," he said as she shook her head.
"Tell me you haven't been listening to the police scanner again?" Helen said, already knowing the answer.
"Look, I performed a public service. You act like that's a bad thing," He sighed as she also sighed.
"It is a bad thing, Bob! Uprooting our family again, so you can relive the glory days is a very bad thing!" she yelled at him.
"Reliving the glory days is better than acting like they didn't happen!" he yelled back at her.
"Yes! They happened! But this, our family, is what's happening now, Bob. And you are missing this!" she said exasperatedly. "I can't believe you don't wanna go to your own son's graduation!"
"It's not a graduation. He is moving from the fourth grade to the fifth grade," he said, mockingly.
"It's a ceremony!"
"It's psychotic! They keep creating new ways to celebrate mediocrity but if someone is genuinely exceptional-"
"This is not about you, Bob. This is about Dash!"
"You want to do something for Dash? Then let him actually compete! Let him go out for sports!"
"I will not be made the enemy here! You know why we can't do that!"
"Because he'd be great!" Bob yelled.
"This is not about you!" Helen yelled, making herself taller by stretching out her body, suddenly they heard a swift rush running past paper. The parents sighed and piped down.
"All right, Dash. I know you're listening. Come on out," Bob said.
"Vi? Y/N/N? You, too, young ladies,"
"Come on, come on out," Bob said as Dash came out from behind a chair and Y/N and Violet emerged from behind the couch. All three of them with downtrodden expressions on their faces.
"It's okay, kids. We're just having a discussion," Bob said as he took a step toward them.
"Pretty loud discussion," Violet said as she sat down on the couch.
"But that's okay. What's important is that Mommy and I are always a team. We're always united against, uh forces of uh-" Bob said before his wife cut him off.
"Pigheadedness?" she suggested.
"Yeah well, I was gonna say evil," Bob muttered.
"We're sorry we woke you. Everything's okay. Go back to bed. It's late," Helen said to her kids as they headed back to their rooms.
"Good night, Mom. Night dad," Dash said as he walked past them..
"Good night Violet muttered, heading to her room herself.
"Sleep well," Y/N said as she walked past them and followed her younger siblings.
"In fact we should all be in bed," Helen told Bob. Hearing that, he walked after his kids and into his and Helen's room. Helen sighed again and shut off the light before she went to bed herself.
