Mike had waited for someone to come to rescue him for the first few weeks. However, he was not in a hurry to leave because of Abby. Mike enjoyed his new life. However, unfortunately for Mike, Abby had been betrothed to Marpe, the village's most powerful and dangerous warrior.

Mike often had run-ins with Marpe until Marpe eventually came up to him and said

"By order of the tribe elders, and under the eyes of our gods, I challenge you to a fight to the death, for the heart of Abby. Accept and fight, or refuse, and live your days in shame!"

He had thought Marpe was joking until Abby told him about this ancient tradition. He learned that in the past, when two men are in love with a woman, and she can't decide, they're required to fight to the death in order to determine who shall have the woman's hand in marriage. It was a rare occurrence, as most men either didn't feel their love was worth dying for or believed they would die in the combat. If any man refuses to fight, the woman must pick her lover, or the tribe would automatically decide the winner to be the second man. Mike was determined to prove himself to Abby, so he agreed to the fight. Abby wanted to talk him out of it, so she poured her heart out.

"Mike, I love you! You know I admire you, but I'm already engaged to Marpe!"

"If you love me as you say, why not call off the marriage?! Come back to America with me." Mike said

Abby said with tears coming down her face, "It's not as easy as it sounds. If I do that, I'll lose all my respect and status in this tribe."

"Then I guess I have to kill Marpe to win your hand in marriage, as it appears, I've already won your heart."

"Don't be a fool, Mike! Marpe is a warrior, and he will kill you!"

"Don't forget that I've been training, and I'm also a strong warrior. If it proves my love for you, so be it."

With that, Mike walked away to start preparing for the fight. Abby stormed off, trying to be strong and act normal, but this was eating her alive. She did not want Mike to fight at all. But she silently wished he would win, and they would finally be together.
