Asia's POV
Booker T Washington High School
961 West Military Hwy
Norfolk, Virginia
I was watching this dude bouncing the basketball on the polished gym floor, as I was sitting on the bleachers during Study Hall. My cocoa, brown eyes were gazing at his milk chocolate skin, with sweat dribbling down his face and neck, in his white shirt, red shorts, white Nike knee socks, and white Nike sneakers.
Something inside me went off. It was a love bomb. I officially had a crush on this dude. But, I just sat on the bleachers like a lump on a log. I couldn't move an inch. I was trapped in a wall of shyness. The wall was built strong, and it was impossible to break through.
The bell rang, signaling it was now time for lunch. This dude unfortunately didn't have the lunch period as me. I blew my opportunity to ask him his name. I got in the lunch line, where my friend, Lashay was.
"Hey, girl!" She beamed.
"Yo, babe!" I said.
"Did you just come from the gym?" Lashay asked.
"Yeah, I was in there for Study Hall," I replied.
"And?" Lashay pressed me for more details.
"I saw this dude playing basketball, and I have a crush on him."
"Did you speak to him?" Lashay inquired, as she got her lunch tray.
"No, I chickened out," I said, getting my lunch tray. Chicken patties, fries, and chocolate pudding were on the menu. I got a carton of chocolate milk, and sat down where Lashay was sitting.
"Girl, you for real?" Lashay scoffed. "How can you chicken out like that? You gotta get out of your shell, babe! Ya heard me?"
"Yeah," I nodded, taking a bite of my chicken patty, then washing it down with my chocolate milk.
"You gotta reel him in, ya dig? Get him to eat the bait, and don't let him escape!"
"What? I'm not going fishing!" I protested.
"Girl, you is a trip!" Lashay laughed. "You funny, ain't ya?"
"I try to be," I shrugged, sipping more of my chocolate milk.
"His name is Zakeem, in case you're wondering," said Lashay. "He happens to be on the high school basketball team."
"I see," I said.
"He's going to Richmond for this basketball tournament, next week," said Lashay.
"Why in Richmond? That's an hour away, ain't it?"
"Darned if I know," said Lashay, finishing up her lunch. "Girl, eat up your lunch before the bell rings!"
"You ain't my mother, girl!" I laughed. I quickly ate my food, and went up to the cleaning window to discard my tray. The bell rang, and we left the cafeteria.
I gotta speak to Zakeem. Will he like me?
