𝕃𝕀𝔽𝔼 ...hadn't been for Sydney Winchester. But Seattle was a fresh start. Today was the first day of her new life. Today, she started her first year of surgical residency at Seattle Grace. It was one of the most challenging residency programs to be accepted into, but much like most times in her life, she fought tooth and nail to prove she could get in. Here, she could become the best version of herself. Here, she wasn't John Winchesters' daughter, the family's disappointment, or the "faulty twin," as her father called it.
Here she was, soon to be Dr. Sydney Winchester, a 26-year-old who had moved to Seattle looking for a new start. She groaned as she woke up and checked the clock that sat on the nightstand of the shitty motel she was staying at, realizing that if she didn't leave now, she would end up late for her first day.
"Shit," She said, scrambling out of bed, throwing on the outfit she had laid out for herself the day prior. It felt like the first day of school all over again. It was all coming back to her: the preplanned outfits, the pit in her stomach, and the urge to throw up due to her anxiety. The only difference was the absence of the annoying voice that belonged to her twin brother Dean, who would tease her about her nerves but secretly worry about her and give a half-assed speech about how she was the intelligent twin and how she should own it. Or her little brother Sam, who was always so excited about the first day but shared her nerves and would give her a tight hug, each year seemingly growing taller than a beanstalk. But Sydney was not a little girl anymore, and her siblings weren't there. She was in Seattle, and she was alone. But that's how things should be, right?
At this point, she had been alone for years, having not heard from her brothers, let alone her father, in years. The night she left was the last night she had seen them. She thought about her brother often. Thinking about h=what life would have been. Sometimes, she wondered if she should stay home and continue the family business. But she always tried to remind herself that this was best for her. She couldn't stay at home any longer than she did, and it's a miracle she lasted that long.
Yet, she missed her brothers more than usual on days like today. She resisted the urge to pick up the phone and tried to contact them. Tell them about her life and ask about theirs. But she knew she couldn't. She had left; things wouldn't be the same. She had convinced herself that they could never be the same. Though she hadn't spoken to her brothers in years, she tried to keep tabs on them as best as possible. The last thing she heard was that her baby brother was attending Standford University, and she would be lying if she said she didn't shed a few tears of joy at hearing about her brother's ambitions and accomplishments. The last thing she hears about Dean is that he is hunting solo, going off on his own, and continuing the "family business." She thought about her brother often, wondering if that's what he truly wanted. She remembered when they were kids, and he would fantasize about a different life where when he grew up, he would be a fireman, and when she grew up, she would be a surgeon. She remembered the nights they would stay up talking, the nights when John was off hunting on some case, and they wouldn't see him for days. On nights, Sammy would try to hold back tears, asking where their "daddy was and when he was coming back."
