Chapter 5

“Wait, did you say from Stark HQ?! What the fuck, do we know who?”

“No, it wasn't a company issued phone. But that means there is a good chance that the leak was from someone in the company. I'll keep watch, if such a call is made again, I'll be sure to tap the line, sir.” JARVIS says, ready to help however he can. You do feel a little bad doing this to him, but it was necessary.

“No, wait. If it was someone from the company, then they know that you have access to everything here. I need you to hack into the military network in Afghanistan. Maybe even the government networks, as quietly as you can. I want you on surveillance. Expand parameters as needed and look for him, okay? Give PAM incognito access through you.”

“Okay, sir.” After that you deactivate JARVIS.

With all the pieces in place, you finally leave the conference room for your office at HQ. The promise of food on your mind as you walk out of the elevator and down the corridor. You look around plenty on your way, because you've never seen HQ this quiet before. It would be eerie if it wasn't peaceful. You didn't think Obadiah would act this early, but that was your own fault. You guess that he thinks he can still use you for more scientific advancement in weapons or otherwise. Mostly weapons though, since he's seen the potential in the biochemical weapons that you gave the industry. He doesn't like that you so strictly regulate it though. It's a good thing he doesn't know that those weapons are child’s play in front of the ones that you've kept secret.

A familiar pleasant citrus smell greets you as you step into your office. The room is filled with earthy tones of brown, black and green. Your desk is to the left side of the room, surrounded with shelves. The right side of the room holds an entire wall of books and a cozy couch, which is big enough to sleep on. That was the intention afterall. There are soft looking blankets on it and equally soft looking pillows. The center wall has floor to ceiling windows, overlooking the city at this height. Opposite the windows is the storage and mini kitchen. Honestly it looks more like an apartment than an office. Rightly so, since immediately to the right there is a door that leads to a fully equipped bathroom, bathtub and all.

The food is waiting for you on your desk, on it is a note.

A small smile makes its way to your face as you read it. Seems like Pepper picked up your food before she left. Putting the note aside, you take the food out. PAM puts on some music as you eat and change into workout clothes.

It's 4:30 am when you go for a quick run, starting your day earlier than usual. There is a good reason for your office being so well equipped. You have some instant food here, the kind that is both healthy and tastes good. You also have a couple pairs of clothes here. With how much time you spend dealing with cadavers and organisms of all sorts, it does get messy sometimes.

It's still dark out when you go for a run in the park nearby. Nights are some of your favorite times. It's peaceful, the air is fresher, and cooler too. The place isn't deserted, this is the city after all. But it's still relatively quiet. With music playing in your ears, you enjoy your slow jog through the park, making your way back when you're done.

A quick shower and you're ready for the day. You spend the next couple of hours finishing most of your work in advance. After tackling the company things on your schedule for the upcoming days, you move onto finishing doing things for your company in advance. If you're gonna be as busy as you think you are, then it'll be better to get these out of the way first. It's all relatively quick work with PAM there to speed up the process.

“PAM get the helicopter ready. To Malibu.”
“Done.”
“I'm assuming you've already sent the drones to Uncle Rhodey?”
“Yes, the drones have been sent. I've also informed Ben that you may not be available for the next few days and sent him all the things that we got done in advance. JARVIS has also been informed of you going to Malibu, so has Pepper.”
