Static. There was static in your brain, no thoughts at all. You'd never genuinely thought that he would straight up shut down the weapons manufacturing division, because this looks too much like responsibility, like accountability, like acknowledgement. You didn't know when you went from sitting down to standing up. In a hilarious reversal of roles now, you were the one gaping at him. In his entire life, he's never even thought about something like accountability and now here he is.
While a part of you was wondering if they had missed something big in his medical reports, he did something that made you consider that thought even more. He put his hand on your upper back, leading you off the stage with him, all the while you were still trying to wrap your head around another surprise that now he was touching you.
Your very skin tingled at the place of contact as if to question- What was going on. Even through the fabric the touch felt like something that should never happen, like two suns in the sky, like hail in the middle of scorching summer. It took everything in you to not shrug his hand off, from the sheer bizarreness of it.
Leading you outside, he stops, “I know, you have a lot of questions and I'll answer them, but first I want to show you something. Come with me.” He leads you to where Happy has the car going, getting in first. You follow soon after, starving of curiosity as to what this was about.
Continuing the reversal of roles, you have yet to take your eyes off of him, seemingly trying to see if you could get any clues. He wasn't staring at you now, lost in his own head as Happy takes you wherever Tony asked him to take you in an exchange that you missed, since he got in first.
The stopping of the car brought you out of your efforts to x-ray the truth out of him. Looking outside, you were even more puzzled. The arc reactor building, it might as well have been a highschool science project. There was no advancement or breakthrough in the technology in what 30 or so years. You figured that he may have picked the place for privacy.
The both of you got out of the car and walked towards the building, with him continuing the trend of acting weird with how close he was walking to you. Although in front, he kept on looking back seemingly to make sure that you were still following. Scanning your batches you entered the building.
“The arc reactor, what do you think?” he questions, leaning on the railing around the reactor, looking right at you. In your ear, PAM informs you that she’s cut the surveillance, ensuring privacy.
“Uhh…. It's a highschool science project. I mean there hasn’t been any progress on it in a long time. Why?”
Instead of answering your question with words, he slides the strap of his sling off of his shoulders and unbuttons his shirt to show you a glowing circle of light in his chest. From the reports you knew that it existed, but seeing it in person was unreal. It was in his chest, something that looked like the arc reactor. You found it just as unbelievable in person as you had when you read about it.
“We’re…….
We're going to go to my lab, after I make a few phone calls to free me and then you are going to tell me everything. Understood?” You said finally breaking out of your daze. He nodded to you with what looked like a hint of a smile, but you couldn't be sure. You saw Stane enter the building, just as you were stepping out to make the phone calls.“I've reengaged the surveillance, what do we do next?”
“Call Pep and then Steph, followed by uncle Rhodey and Ben.”“Calling Pepper Potts…
Calling Pepper Potts…”“Hello, Kai. What the hell is going on? This is a mess, everything is a mess.
I am getting calls from every reporter in the country, the board, the military. Is he with you?”
