Meredith walked through her house. She was feeling sore after a long day at work. Carolyn had left her some food she could heat up so she was now sitting on the couch with a plate of lasagna, one of her favorites
Earlier she had gone to her daughter's bedroom to tuck her in and give her a night night kiss as Ellis always demanded
Carolyn had left just a little while ago after she had stayed with Ellis all day
Meredith was waiting for Derek to arrive but she had no idea when that would be. It's the only perk of living closer to the hospital again, he'd be home much sooner
But at the same time that was the main reason why they moved again.. so he'd be home sooner in case something was wrong
She couldn't finish her plate of lasagna, it was way too much even if she had already taken a very, very small portion
"Mama?" She suddenly heard Ellis' tiny voice, the girl was 4 years old now
"Hey monkey, why are you awake?" Meredith placed the food down on the table and walked up to her daughter, checking the size of her colostomy bag with her hand to see when she would need to empty
"I want milk.." Ellis muttered and walked up to her mom, lifting her arms so she'd be picked up
"Come here, little monkey." Meredith lifted her daughter into her arms and took her to the kitchen where she prepared her a cup with milk.
"I had bad dweam." She muttered
"Oh princess, you're okay now. Why don't you climb into the big bed with me?" Meredith suggested, grabbing the cup and carrying her daughter to her own bedroom
"Kay mama." Ellis muttered tiredly
Meredith placed her daughter down on the mattress and handed her the cup
"Give me 5 minutes to quickly get ready." Meredith said. She really had to empty her colostomy bag or she'd burst
Meredith hurried and eventually got in bed with her daughter, holding her tight against herself
"Night night mama." Ellis whispered
"Night night, mommy and daddy love you." Meredith whispered
Time went by before Deren finally arrived. The house was quiet so he assumed Meredith was asleep. He saw the unfinished plate of lasagna on the small table and immediately knew his wife wasn't able to finish dinner. He went to check if her feeding pump had been used but no
So he quickly set it all ready and went to their bedroom, only then he spotted his daughter cuddled into her mom's arms
Derek lifted Meredith's shirt and hooked her up to the feeding pump. He took a moment to check her colostomy bag, it wasn't that full yet and it should be fine until Meredith woke up so he quickly got into bed with them, holding Ellis and Meredith tight as he drifted off
...
The next morning Meredith was getting Ellis ready for the day while Derek was making dinner for them
"Mama, I gots to see nana and poppa!" Ellis giggled
"You'll see them after school, they'll come pick you up." Meredith explained, finishing braiding Ellis' blonde hair
"I want pancakes!" Ellis chuckled
"Daddy's making you some right now so let's hurry." Meredith said and continued. Eventually both of them got to the kitchen
"Right on time, come get seated." Derek smiled
Ever since he started dating Meredith he had been even more obsessed with cooking healthy food. Her health hasn't been very great, especially not the past years which made it scary sometimes
So he tried to provide her from healthy food, even if she wasn't always a fan, causing them to laugh at the conversations they often had about the food
"Daddy! Nana said you gots make soup!" Ellis told her father
"Oh really?" Derek laughed, knowing his mom often made soup for Meredith as it was usually the easiest for her to eat at work as she could heat up several small cups throughout the day
"I think I need nana's cookies." Meredith winked
"Snickerdoodles!" Ellis nodded
"Hmm.. what about carrot cookies?" Derek teased
"No!" Both Meredith and Ellis scrunched up their noses
"I'll ask mom." Derek chuckled softly
"Thanks.." Meredith rolled her eyes and ate some of the fruit.
"Did you pack everything to spend the night with Nana and poppa?" Derek asked his daughter
"Yes daddy!" Ellis giggled. "Gots everything."
"Perfect monkey." Derek smiled. "How are you?" He asked his wife why was oddly quiet
"Fine." She forced a smile before continuing to eat her food
Derek frowned, he felt like something was up but didn't wanna push her with their daughter around
"Come on, monkey. Let's go get your coat on." Meredith said and got up, holding her daughter's hand
"Do you have surgery?" Derek asked his wife
"Yeah, I do this afternoon. But I'm at PEDS all day." She explained
"Do you even wanna go back to general?" He frowned
"I don't think so." Meredith muttered and got her daughter all ready to leave
"Come on, monkey. Let's get in the car." Derek said and lifted her in his arms
Meredith quickly checked her own bag before she locked the house and got in the car as well
"Are you ready?" Derek checked on her
"I am, yes." Meredith smiled softly, buckling herself in and waiting until Derek would start driving the short distance to their house
"How do you feel about going to the cliff for a weekend?" Derek asked her
"Sounds nice." She smiled softly. "I feel like I need vacation."
"Let's do that then." Derek squeezed her hand. "What about we go to the cliff for the weekend?"
"What about Richard? We can't leave him the whole weekend, Derek." Meredith frowned
"He'll be fine, Mer. The nurses are looking after him." Derek squeezed her hand. "We don't have to if you don't want."
"Mama? I wanna go.." Ellis muttered from the backseat
"I'll go see Richard and ask him." Meredith muttered and just looked outside
