With his arms crossed tight and a sour face like an old man's, anyone could tell Tomioka was stressed. Normally, the other Hashiras would brush it off, as he's the grumpy loner guy. But this time was different.
It was in the middle of a meeting with Ubuyashiki. He was discussing among the Hashiras, a situation that was growing out of control.
Muzan Kibutsuji.
The strongest demon, the one that started it all.
The many slaughters of numerous families, the many deaths and suffering of Tanjiro Kamado. They were so close to ridding the world of the one responsible for it.
"I won't do it."
Silence.
Who would dare tell Ubuyashiki no? Who would define the man, that was like a father to the Hashiras?
They've gotten this far, all this effort of killing demons to track down Muzan. The demon who caused all the losses the world has suffered. Why quit now? And Who would quit now?
Shinobu Kocho, the insect pillar, turned her head to look at Tomioka. She didn't say a word, only letting her face talk.
In fact, no one said a word to the objection. Well, until Sanemi Shinazugawa, the wind pillar, spoke up in his grating voice. His usual temper boiled up and caused a few veins to pop on his head.
"Why, you think you're too good to go on this mission?" Sanemi approached Tomioka, gripping his Haori.
"Guys-" The love pillar Hashira, Mitsuri Kanroji. She stood on the side of this starting flame of a fight. She moved her hands up and down, in an attempt to break it up.
None of the other Hashiras did much, only holding onto their growing curiosity. They knew not to get involved, especially in front of their master.
"That's not at all what I think." Tomioka said, monotoned. He stood there, unmoving as Sanemi's grip threatened to choke him.
"Sanemi." Ubuyashiki finally spoke, holding his hand up.
Sanemi didn't move for a few seconds, glaring at Tomioka. As if he was cursing him with his eyes.
"Tch, you're disgraceful." He growled before finally tearing his hand away. He then faced toward Ubuyashiki, and bowed slightly.
"Tomioka, may I ask why you refuse?" Ubuyashiki asked calmy as he always did.
He was never at angry at the Hashiras. That's just how he was. He was gentle and accepting. That's why they all respected him, holding him in a high favor. They would do whatever he ordered. So why, why did Tomioka flatout refuse this time?
The other Hashiras wondered why as well. The guy was quiet and barely spoke out about anything, aside from Tanjiro and Nezuko. He was very passionate about those two.
Shinobu herself was rather curious, she was certainly very nosy at times. The guy she had always made fun of, that was softspoken, had something to say for once.
"My wife." Tomioka balled his hands into fists by his sides. It'd been months since he last seen her.
Tengen Uzui, the sound pillar, failed to keep in his laugh. When Tomioka said those two words, immediate spit and laughter spew from his mouth.
"A guy like you, has a wife?" He giggled as he pointed at Tomioka.
It was hard to believe, a stoic quiet guy like him, has a wife? A loving, caring wife that was never brought up?
"Yes, is there something amusing to you, sound pillar?" Tomioka shot a look a Uzui. It was an understatement to say it was just a "dirty glare."
It was as sharp as a knife. And he said it so seriously too. His voice was still, intimidating and deep.
It would take a blade to cut the tension in the room at the moment. Tension that instantly grew because of his tone.
He was serious.
