A demon.
'How could I underestimate a demon?' Giyu berated himself.
He still had a hard time making good judgments. Because of this, he was found bleeding out on the ground.
'Dumb, Dumb, Dumb.' He repeated in his head, over and over again. He could feel a burning pain spread from his left shoulder to his arm.
He groaned and his gasps for air only came in shallow breaths. He wasn't going to die due to an irrelevant demon. He couldn't.
He was assigned a mission from Kanzaburou, his Kasugai crow. A case of children disappearing.
"Many children have gone missing in (name) village! Rumors say it's caused by a demon! CaCaw!" He heard the old crow's voice ring in his ears. He was surprised that the crow could even remember the village name. He was ancient, and always worried Giyu.
The demon was faster than he thought. It reminded him of a reptile, the way it moved and talked.
A good while into the fight, it didn't engage with him. It didn't get near him or try to swipe at him. It was a very noticeable ploy. A ploy that Giyu, unfortunately, fell for. He still had a lot to learn. Honestly, who was he kidding? He was only a 16 year old after all.
Giyu thought it'd be an easy mission, considering that he slayed most of the demons he came across. He knew there'd be some sort of struggle, but he screwed up.
He screwed up, and now he was facing the consequences. Consequences that might cost him his job.
At least he thought.
"Hel-Hello? Are you okay, sir?" he heard a soft voice speaking into his ear.
'A girl?'
After he felt something put pressure on his body, he heard a girl's voice shortly after. He was obviously in no state to answer her back, however.
There was a pounding in his head. His body ached with pain and soreness. He felt hot. Hot and cold at the same time.
Soon after hearing the girl's voice, silence followed. It was quiet and dark. He had lost consciousness fully at that point.

STING
'What the hell?' He felt sick, and the aching in his head was still prominent. He could barely hear his own thoughts over it.
His left side felt numb and a breeze flew over his bare chest.
Where was he?
It was a warm, wooden place. And he was splayed out on a stone table.
"Oh good, you're awake. How are you feeling?" An old man with small glasses inched his way to Giyu's side.
'A doctor?' just what happened after that demon sliced him open?
All he could remember was that girl's voice. Did she bring him here? All by herself?
"The girl," he mumbled.
"I'm sorry?" The doctor tilted his head and pushed up his glasses.
"The one who saved me, the girl, where is she?" Giyu stood up, stumbling sideways a bit.
"You shouldn't get up too soon!" The doctor almost had a heart attack when he suddenly hopped off the table.
Giyu looked around the doctor's office, he saw his uniform hanging on a chair, but where was his sword?
'Does she have it? Did she steal it?'
He knew the second bit would be unlikely, but it wasn't impossible.
His eyes soon landed on the door, he moved his feet one by one and stopped. Giyu could feel that he was getting dizzy. But he didn't want to be without his sword, so, he opened the door.
Once he did, he was met with a humble-looking girl. She reminded him of a mouse. The way her mouth hung open and the way she stared at him with her big eyes.
CLACK
And she dropped his sword.
"Sir you can't move just yet!" Giyu heard the doctor pleading with him, but he brushed it off.
"Sword," he grunted and leaned against the doorframe. He still felt dizzy and needed support before he fell.
She still stood there, like an awkward deer this time. He didn't care that she stared like an idiot. He just kept his eyes trained on hers.
Giyu then glanced at his sword, hinting that he was ready for it to be back in his hands.
"Oh, right!" She fumbled over her own words.
He continued to stare at her, examining her.
'She's the one that saved me? She's so... Strange.'
--------------------------------------
Giyu was soon discharged later in the day. The doctor insisted he stayed and healed for at least a few days. But Giyu didn't have a few days.
'There's still a demon on the loose.'
Before he left he did ask a few questions. He'd be dumb not to.
"Do you know that girl's name?" Giyu queried as he buttoned his shirt back on.
He looked at his haori, it'd take a few washes for that stain to come out.
"Ah, are you talking about Y/n? She's the one who brought you in." The doctor had a small smile.
"Yes, her." He stopped fixing his uniform for a second.
'She goes by her first name?'
The doctor shook his head and let out a little snicker, "She lives just down the path. I mean, if you're interested in visiting her, to give your thanks. Her house has many little trinkets hanging outside."
Giyu thought for a moment. Did he want to thank her? It'd be rude if he didn't, but did he have time? It wasn't worth it.
Well, he'd at least give her a letter.
