"You've been here for a while, right?"
"Feels like centuries have passed."
"So, you must know what makes each of these patients tick?"
"I've witnessed every single one of them have a fit over something or another."
"Who would you say gets the most riled up? We need someone who will take up the strength of every guard."
She cast her eyes to the side, looking around the room. "Right there."
I followed her finger to see a tall man deeply hunched over in his seat, his eyes were glued to the screen but it didn't look like he was taking anything in.
His name flashed in my mind.
"Phillip Cline."
"How do you know him?"
"I saw him once, working in the bakery."
"He gets sent there often. An attempt by Sister Jude to calm him down and get him to think about something other than the war."
"I need you to set him off. Do whatever you have to do."
She nodded and slipped her hand out of mine, getting up and making her way over to a patient who sat near Phillip.
Diana leaned down and spoke to the other woman, and I saw her gesture to the corner where the spare folding chairs were leaning up against the wall. The woman smiled wide and pushed past Diana to get to where the chairs were.
"Mousey! Here, mousey!" I heard her shout.
In her glee to find the mouse she knocked up against the stack of chairs, which fell to the floor with a loud bang.
Phillip Cline's back straightened up and he yelled. "The Germans are here! The Germans are here!"
He stood up and began to pull the other patients out of their seats. "We need to get out of here!"
The orderlies immediately converged on the poor man and tried to restrain him but his fit gave him hidden strength and he punched and shoved the orderlies out of his way, sending the room into complete chaos.
Diana locked eyes with me and I nodded, smiling at her.
We quickly made our way to the doors and slipped out into the quiet hallway.
"Come on!"
I grabbed her hand in mine and we started to run, the smell of fresh air already in my nose.

We made it to the end of the second hallway before a voice stopped us in our tracks.
"What do you two think you're doing?"
Both Diana and I turned around, finding both Kit and Emma standing there with angry looks on their faces.
"We're leaving this hell hole." I answered.
"You owe Emma an apology, Freya. You promised her freedom and then turned around and got her caught while you stood on the sidelines."
I sighed. "Emma, I'm sorry. I panicked and spoke without thinking. I hope you can forgive me."
Her round eyes shone with tears. "You can make it up to me by letting Kit and I come with you guys tonight."
I relented quickly, knowing that I owed it to her. "Okay, both of you can come. Now let's get out of here before anyone sees us."
The four of us began to run down the hallways, and we reached the final door to go through before we were stopped in our tracks again.
"There's an orderly coming!" whispered Kit.
We flattened ourselves against the wall, hearts pounding.
"Which orderly is it?" Diana asked.
"He's short, shaved head, and wears glasses."
"That's Norman. He likes it when I give him attention. I'll distract him long enough for the rest of you to get to the tunnel. Wait for me."
"Wait-" I reached out my hand, grabbing her dress. "You don't have to do this."
"If I don't do this you won't be able to get out. You need to shut this place down."
She placed her hands on either side of my face and passionately kissed me; leaving me pink cheeked and breathless. "Good luck, Freya."
Then, she was gone.
I stood there in shock over how quick she had sacrificed her chance of leaving to help me. I would've stood there for the rest of the night if it weren't for Emma and Kit grabbing my hands and dragging me down the hallway.
After a couple of minutes I came back to my senses and directed us to the room with the mattresses.
We hurriedly removed the mattresses out of the way and opened up the door to the tunnel. I immediately felt the cold from the outside and I shivered with a smile on my face.
"Can you feel that?"
"I do. I feel it." Emma smiled and her fingers laced with Kit's.
"We just have to wait for Diana." I said.
"How long do you think she'll be?" Kit asked.
"She shouldn't be much longer."
We stood there for a few more minutes, bouncing on the balls of our feet with nervousness.
"Freya, we can't wait for her any longer. Someone will notice we're gone." Kit said.
I gritted my teeth and nodded.
"Then let's go."
