"Kit. Kit, wake up."
He groaned and opened up his eyes. "Freya."
"You never told me what happened. How did he get you to confess? How did you escape?"
He sat up and yawned, taking a sip of water from the glass on his bedside table. "A couple of hours after you had left Emma and I, Thredson came to get me. He twisted my words, confused me and got me to confess to a murder I would never have committed. It wasn't until after he left that I realized what had happened. But by then, it was too late. The police came for me and threw me in a cell. I got out when I was speaking with an attorney in his office. I hit him over the head and jumped out the window. I could've gone to a train station but I couldn't have left Emma here and I had no clue when you were going to come back. I ran back in through the tunnel that you showed us but one of those creatures must've followed me. When I saw Emma in the kitchen I was so happy to see her and she was so happy to see me. I kissed her for the first time, and in that moment I was amazed that such an innocent soul could be locked up in a place like this. That's when the creature ran in the room. She screamed and I tried protecting her but it managed to scratch her face and she fell, hitting her head on the floor and getting knocked out. Murphy came in the room wanting to know what all the commotion was about and the creature fixed its attention on him. It tore him apart Freya. Tore him until he didn't resemble a human being anymore. The creature turned to me and I just kept hitting it, over and over, until it died. Its arm gave one last spasm and I quickly backed up, tripping over the mess on the floor and hitting my head before passing out."
I sat down heavily on his bed, in shock over everything he had gone through.
"I think I know where those creatures came from."
My mind flashed back to when I had gone looking for Diana, and heard Dr. Arden and Monsignor Howard speaking to each other in the hallway.
They had been talking about experiments and were worried about getting found out.
I had a strong feeling that the creatures were the product of that experiment and that Diana was well on her way to becoming one, if she hadn't already.

I got a pass to leave the infirmary, after having played on the nun's sympathy about needing to see Nurse McKillian concerning how I had been unable to keep any food down. It was a worry of mine but at the moment, what mattered was finding Diana.
The nun was going to insist on walking me there but Kit distracted her by wetting his bed. Which I was very thankful for.
I could hear her tutting at him as I walked out of the door, yelling that I knew the way and would be right back. She was too busy to notice.
My feet froze on the cold floors but I hurried on, I didn't have enough time to go looking for shoes. I made it to the steel door and stood in front of it, touching it at various spots to figure out how to open it.
I need a fucking key.
My shoulders slumped in defeat.
Footsteps echoed down the hall and I jumped, running to go hide in the closet that I had hid in last time I was in this area.
It was Dr. Arden.
I could tell because he was mumbling to himself about something, and seemed upset.
I heard the jingle of keys and he opened up the door, slamming it shut behind him. Not five minutes later, I heard another set of footsteps. Then, a loud banging.
Arden opened up the door.
"What do you-Sister Jude. Can't say this is a pleasant surprise."
"I have no time for your banter, Arden. I need to speak with you. It's urgent."
"I heard you tipped the bottle back a bit too far down your throat and got demoted. So, what business do you have being back here? Can't say I've missed you."
She heavily sighed, sounding frustrated. "It's about Sister Mary Eunice."
"Mary Eunice?" He sounded alarmed. "I'll be right there."
"There's no time to get anything. She could notice that I'm here any second. Just leave the door. Everyone knows not to go in your lab and the patients aren't allowed down here."
"Fine. But only for a few minutes."
The steel door shut with a bang and their footsteps gradually faded down the hallway.
I shot up out of the closet and went straight to the door, staring down its imposing frame.
"Now. Let's see what he's been so eager to hide."
I pushed open the door, the cold of the steel seeping beneath my skin and into my bones.
