I was back to work that Monday. After getting to spend time with the people I loved most, it was definitely time for me to start getting serious about my career again. However, I didn't get to start my morning like I usually did. Beyoncé had some early meetings for a new brand endorsement, so I was left to get ready by myself.
You see, you never know how much you admire someone's company until you don't have it for one day. That girl is really my everything, even though she purposely tries to make me late.
I clocked in and got my things situated in my locker, fixing my hair in the mirror and making sure I looked prepped and ready for the day ahead. Saying I don't love my job would be far beyond a lie. I learn more as I go along, exceeding the amount of knowledge I already have. Plus the tiny relationships I get to build with my patients, it's so fun to me.
Of course, like any other nurse, I have my ups and downs, but it's nothing I can't control or get over.
The door swung open and in walked Ciara with a big smile. "Good Morning, Nicki. Ready for your new patients?" She hands me a clipboard with multiple files on it, some with my original patients and some with brand new ones.
"Always ready," I replied kindly, skipping through to find my favorite. My emotions changed in an instant. "Wait a minute, Morgan's tumor grew? I was just with him before my trip, the doctor told me things were fine." I frowned.
"Oh, right. Morgan hadn't spoken to anyone since you went on your trip, he didn't even mention any pain so we had to force him to go through another screening. It was a shock to all of us, we thought he was getting better." She mentioned and my heart felt like it was breaking.
Mr. Freeman is my favorite, the most charismatic man I've ever met in my entire life. He's been kind to me since day one and I always seem to forget that he's dying because he never makes it seem like that. His smile is always bright and he still holds a conversation so well, it's sad having this information in my hands, knowing his situation.
"Does his family know?" I wearily asked.
"Most of his contacts wouldn't pick up the phone, but one of his daughters are visiting him today."
"That's good, I'll make sure to keep him as a priority today. The kids as well. I see I still have Ms. Bennett, too." I refrain from rolling my eyes, forcing a smile. Ciara chuckled, nodding her head knowingly. I sighed, "okay, fine. But you know I can barely stand the woman."
"I know, but you're the only nurse that hasn't had a confrontation with her, so you're my only hope, Nic. Plus she just got out of surgery, so she won't be judging anyone for some time." She says and I finally rolled my eyes. After finishing up our conversation, I started my rounds. I checked in with the kids first, addressing their parents' concerns and waiting with them for their doctors. Then I went to see Ms. Bennett, who was thankfully still on anesthesia from her surgery.
