Dyuti had been admitted to the hospital as her infection had worsened. In the initial days, she was kept in the ICU. For the first night, this was unexpected, no one from home could come so Shubhi was sleeping outside the ICU on a chair.
Dr. Rajan, a steady presence throughout the ordeal, walked in with a kind smile. "Shubhi, you should try to get some rest. You've been running all day and now need to rest at night."
Shubhi: (her voice breaking) I can't leave her. What if something happens?
Understanding her concern, Rajan left briefly and returned with a blanket from his chamber. "You don't have to leave. You can rest here. It's not much, but it might help."
Shubhi hesitated, then took the blanket gratefully. "Thank you," she whispered, settling into a chair beside Dyuti's bed.
The night was long and restless, with Shubhi dozing off only briefly, constantly waking to check on her daughter. When she woke up, she found a small pillow under her head. Her slippers were placed perfectly to the side. She looked around and could not see anyone who would do it. Then she returned the pillow to Dr Rajan thinking that he had done it.
The next morning, Shubhi walked into Rajan's office with the pillow and blanket in her arms. She looked exhausted but managed a warm smile. "Thank you for these," she said, handing them back. "They helped."
Rajan smiled back, nodding. "Glad to be of service. My office isn't a five-star hotel, but we make do."
Shubhi chuckled softly and nodded before leaving the room. As the door closed behind her, Daivik, sprawled out on the couch, sat up, blocked from view by a stack of books. He stretched and rubbed his eyes, grumbling slightly.
He caught the tail end of the exchange between Shubhi and Rajan and couldn't help but feel a twinge of jealousy. "Well, isn't this cosy? I didn't know you were running a pillow and blanket service now."
Rajan (smiling, leaning back in his chair, wanting to tease his friend): Hey, you gotta diversify, right? Pillows, blankets, and the medical advice."
Daivik: (rolling his eyes, a small smile on his face): Sure, sure. And I suppose next you'll be offering room service and a breakfast menu?
Rajan:( laughed): I can plan on that. For today you can get cereal and orange juice. But seriously, Daivik, I am not a competition. I am just trying to help.
Daivik (crossing his arms): And here I thought the hospital was paying you big bucks! It's just...well, you seem to have this whole 'knight in shining armour' vibe.
Rajan: You have been the one running around her and for her, all day yesterday and night
Daivik smiled faintly: Hope she doesn't know, don't tell her...
Rajan: Not yet. But I will not allow you to be Dev-das...we should tell her.
Daivik: No use, she hates me, she will stop accepting even your help!
Rajan: She thinks there are elves in the hospital. I will tell her you are the Elf.
Daivik: (walking out of the room) Nah, she knows I am the Wolf
Rajan: Welf, then?
Daivil laughs as he makes his way to the upper floors where an apartment has been temporarily prepared for his stay.
The next morning again Shubhi saw water and food kept neatly next to her chair. She was thankful to the good doctor for caring so much for her. Viren, Veni and Darsh dropped in for some time every day. Daivik's absence did cross Shubhi's mind but she did not ask about it. The next morning was even better with her favorite coffee and breakfast waiting for her.
