It was Sunday morning, and the cottage was quiet. Rowan had woken up early, her mind restless with thoughts of her father's secrecy. The argument from the previous night still weighed heavily on her, and she felt a deep-seated need to address it.

After breakfast, Rowan resolved to confront her father again. She found him in the living room, sorting through some papers. He looked up as she approached, a mixture of weariness and resignation in his eyes.

"Dad, we need to talk," Rowan said, her voice firm but calm.

Her father sighed and put down the papers. "Alright, Rowan. What's on your mind?"

"I can't keep going like this," she began, her frustration barely contained. "I need to understand what's going on. I can't just accept that you're hiding things from me and that I'm supposed to be okay with it."

Her father's shoulders slumped, and he rubbed his temples as if trying to gather his thoughts. "Rowan, I know you're frustrated, and I'm sorry for that. But some things are not as straightforward as you might think."

Rowan crossed her arms, trying to stay calm despite her rising anger. "Then make them straightforward. You've been keeping secrets and avoiding my questions. I need to know what's happening. I'm not a child anymore."

Her father's expression hardened, and he stood up, pacing the room. "It's not that I don't want to tell you. It's just that there are things I can't explain right now. Things that involve more than just you and me."

"Like what?" Rowan asked, her voice rising. "What could be so important that you can't share it with me?"

He stopped pacing and looked at her with a mixture of frustration and desperation. "There are dangers involved, Rowan. I'm trying to protect you from things you don't understand. I don't want you to get hurt."

Rowan's eyes flashed with determination. "By keeping me in the dark, you're only making things worse. I feel like you're shutting me out. If you're really trying to protect me, then you need to be honest with me. I deserve to be part of whatever is happening."

Her father's face reddened with anger. "You think I'm trying to push you away? I'm doing this because I care about you! There are things in our past that are dangerous. You're not ready to face them."

Rowan felt a surge of hurt and frustration. "But you're making me feel like I'm not capable of handling the truth. You're pushing me away, and it's tearing me apart."

The argument escalated, their voices growing louder, their emotions raw. Rowan's father seemed to reach a breaking point, his face a mask of frustration and helplessness.

"Do you think this is easy for me?" he shouted. "I'm trying to balance protecting you and keeping us safe. You have no idea how difficult this is."

Rowan's heart pounded, her tears threatening to spill over. "I'm not asking for much. I just want to understand what's going on. I want to be a part of it, not left in the dark."

The room fell silent, the intensity of their confrontation hanging in the air. Rowan's father sank into a chair, his anger giving way to exhaustion. "I don't know how much more of this I can take," he said quietly. "I'm trying to do what's best, but it's tearing me apart too."

Rowan's anger melted into sorrow as she saw the pain in her father's eyes. She took a deep breath, trying to regain her composure. "I know you're trying your best, Dad. But I need you to be honest with me. I can't keep living like this."

Her father looked up at her, his expression a mixture of regret and resolve. "I'll try to find a way to explain things to you. I promise. But please, understand that some things are more complicated than they seem."

Rowan nodded, her heart heavy but relieved. "Thank you, Dad. I just want us to be able to talk openly and trust each other."

As she left the room, Rowan felt a mix of frustration and hope. The conversation had been difficult, but she was determined to keep pushing for answers. She knew that their relationship needed to heal, and that meant confronting the secrets that had been kept from her. As she headed outside, Scout trotting beside her, she resolved to stay strong and keep searching for the truth, no matter how challenging it might be.
