The day was bright and clear as Rowan arrived at the grand mansion nestled on the outskirts of town. The sprawling estate, surrounded by lush gardens and elegant stonework, spoke of both wealth and tradition. Rowan felt a mix of excitement and nervousness fluttering in her stomach. Meeting Alex's parents for the first time was a significant step, and she wanted to make a good impression.
Alex had been reassuring her all week, and he was by her side as they approached the front door. The mansion's opulent façade was impressive, with tall columns and a grand entrance that seemed to exude both warmth and authority. As they walked up the steps, Alex squeezed Rowan's hand gently.
"They're going to love you," Alex said, his voice filled with confidence. "My mom can't wait to meet you."
Rowan smiled, though her nerves were still evident. "I hope so. I'm excited but a little anxious."
Before Alex could respond, the door swung open, revealing a woman with a warm smile and an open embrace. Alex's mother, who looked every bit as welcoming and poised as Alex had described, stood before them.
"Alex! There you are!" she exclaimed, her eyes lighting up as she took in Rowan standing beside him. "And this must be Rowan. I'm so thrilled to finally meet you!"
Rowan's nerves began to settle as she saw the genuine warmth in Eleanor's eyes. "Nice to meet you," Rowan said, extending her hand.
Eleanor took her hand with a gentle shake and then pulled her into a hug. "Oh, don't be silly, we're family now. No need for formalities." She stepped back, holding Rowan's shoulders and looking her up and down with a mixture of admiration and affection. "You're even more lovely than Alex described. I've heard so many wonderful things about you."
Rowan blushed slightly, feeling a surge of relief. "Thank you. Alex has told me a lot about you, too. I'm really happy to be here."
"Come in, come in!" Eleanor said, ushering them inside. The mansion's interior was just as impressive as its exterior, with high ceilings, grand chandeliers, and elegant furnishings that spoke of both luxury and warmth. People were coming and going, with staff bustling around to prepare for the evening. The sounds of lively conversation and laughter drifted through the halls, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.
As they entered the grand foyer, Alex's father, John, who had been greeting guests in the garden, came in to join them. His face, though kind, carried a certain sternness, and his demeanor was more reserved compared to Eleanor's warmth.
"Alex. And you must be Rowan," John said, extending a firm handshake. "I'm John. It's good to meet you."
Rowan took his hand, feeling the firmness of his grip and noting the serious expression in his eyes. "Nice to meet you, John. I've heard so much about you."
John's eyes softened slightly, though his demeanor remained composed. "I've heard a lot about you as well. I trust you've been taking good care of my son?"
Rowan nodded, meeting his gaze with sincerity. "Yes, I have. Alex has been wonderful to me."
John's gaze remained steady, but a faint hint of a smile touched his lips. "Well, it's clear that you care deeply for each other. That's important to me."
Eleanor, ever the gracious host, gently guided them to the dining area, which was set with an array of delicious-looking dishes and elegantly arranged for the evening's meal. The aroma of home-cooked food mingled with the fresh scents of the garden, creating a welcoming and delightful ambiance.
"Sit down, sit down," Eleanor urged, gesturing to the chairs around the grand dining table. "We've got your favorites, Alex. And Rowan, I've made a few things I thought you might like, based on what Alex has told me."
