The clock read 1:12 AM.
Kendall was wide awake with nothing else but the buzz of her TV and her thoughts. She had come home a day ago, a quick rest before the NCAA tournament was to start. They had won the Big Ten Tournament and November had rolled on by now. Although she was happy for a small break, she spent almost all of her hours home making more organized tables for press and media calendars for the basketball girls. She only stepped out of her apartment to get coffee or an energy drink from Hawk Cafe. Currently, she was lying awake on her couch and she was bored. Quite honestly fidgeting with boredom.
Meanwhile, Caitlin was also in the same boat. Her hood was on, legs tucked under a blanket, and wide awake on her couch. She flipped through her phone as she couldn't sleep at all. It was odd, Caitlin loved sleep and usually would be out by now even though she drank an energy drink earlier in the day. She was thinking about a lot of things, even one being how she hadn't seen Kendall at all since she came home yesterday. But she knew that she was crazy tired, so she let her have her alone time. Texting her now would suffice. Caitlin couldn't put her finger on it, but she wanted to see her and has been craving her presence ever since she left. Basketball games and practices have kept her at bay, but Kendall would be an extra plus.
Kendall was scrolling on her phone now, the buzz of her TV filling her ears. She put on How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days to give her some kind of comfort. But she was craving human interaction, as she had only been texting people during this period of rest. Her finger hovered over the contact, thinking back and forth.
Maybe it's too forward.
Maybe she's asleep.
She'll think it's weird.
But Kendall said fuck it.
Kendall clicked the call button on Caitlin's contact. The phone line went beeping twice, then Kendall was surprised to hear Caitlin's voice. Clear as day.
"Hey, Ken," said Caitlin, her voice ringing through Kendall's speaker. Kendall immediately smiled to herself.
"Hi," breathed Kendall softly. "I'm sorry,
I just couldn't sleep. And I-I, oh gosh. Go back to sleep I'm sure you were-""Kenny," laughed Caitlin, shutting Kendall up. "I wasn't asleep. I also can't seem to fall asleep tonight. Are you okay?"
"I'm fine, just couldn't sleep. That's all."
A beat passed, and Kendall said fuck it once more. With no thought.
"Um, do you want to come over?" asked Kendall, but then the question sunk in and she had a second to think again. "Shoot, sorry. You don't have to, it's so late. I'm just not thinking-"
"I would love to," said Caitlin, smiling into her phone as Kendall rambled on apologies.
"What? You don't have to, I kind of just sprang this up on you," rambled Kendall, making Caitlin chuckle.
"Ken. I'm coming over."
"Caitlin, you really don't have to-"
"But I want to."
"Okay," sighed Kendall with a laugh.
"You overthink too much," laughed Caitlin. "I'll be there in a sec. Can't wait to finally see you."
And then Caitlin hung up, excitedly getting up and grabbing her wallet then heading out the door.
Kendall was blushing tremendously, even just hearing Caitlin's voice made her feel this way. She was starting to come to accept that Caitlin only made her feel this way, then the devil reminding her that this whole thing is a facade always makes its way to the forefront of her mind.
