The girls all giggled and made their way upstairs, leaving the boys to clean up the mess in the living room. Once they were safely behind the closed door of her room, the laughter and chatter grew louder. The space was a flurry of discarded dresses and shoes as they all settled in on the plush carpet.Linh looked at her, her eyes curious. "So, what's going on with you and Keefe?" she asked, her voice gentle.
Sophie felt her cheeks heat up as she tried to find the right words. "We're just friends," she said, her voice a bit too high. "Good friends."
Marella raised an eyebrow, her gaze shrewd. "Is that what you actually believe, if I weren't your friend I'd think you guys were dating.?" she asked, her voice low and probing.
Sophie took a deep breath, feeling the weight of their eyes on her. "I don't actually know," she admitted, her voice small. "I just know that when I'm with him, everything feels...right. Like usually when I have a crush it's just like flurries of butterflies with Keefe I feel like I have known him forever."
Biana's smile grew knowing. "Well, if that's not what friends feel like, I don't know what is," she teased, her eyes dancing with mischief. "But if you say so, Foster."
Sophie rolled her eyes, but couldn't help the warmth that spread through her chest. It was weird, she realized, that only Keefe could get away with calling her "Foster" without it feeling strange. It was like he'd claimed the nickname, made it his own, and every time he said it, it was a gentle reminder of their shared history. "It's just different with him," she said, her voice a whisper.
Linh leaned closer, her eyes soft. "That's how love feels, and not the just friendly type" she said, her voice filled with a knowingness.
Marella nodded in agreement. "You should tell him," she said, her voice firm. "Don't let fear hold you back Soph."
Sophie looked down at her hands, her thumb rubbing the edge of the canvas. "But what if he doesn't feel the same way?" she whispered, her voice barely audible over the chatter. "What if he only thinks of me as a friend? He always agrees that I'm just his friend"
Biana's laugh was light, filled with a certainty that made Sophie's heart race. "Oh, he definitely feels the same," she said, her eyes sparkling. "You just have to look at the way he looks at you."
Sophie's cheeks grew hotter, and she shrugged, trying to play it cool. "Maybe," she said, her voice a little shakier than she'd have liked. "But for now, let's just have fun."
The room erupted in a chorus of agreements, and Biana jumped to her feet, her dress swirling around her ankles. "Who's up for some truth or dare?" she asked, her eyes gleaming with excitement.
Sophie felt a shiver of nerves run down her spine. She'd never been great at truth or dare—too much pressure to either bare her soul or do something ridiculous. But she couldn't say no, not when everyone else was already eagerly agreeing, so they went down and joined the guys to start playing.
They played for a while, the dares mostly silly and the truths mostly harmless.
"Okay, my turn," Dex announced, his eyes glinting with mischief. "Truth or dare, Keefe?"
Keefe leaned back on the couch, his arm casually slung around the back, his eyes never leaving Sophie. "Dare," he said, a hint of a challenge in his tone.
Dex's grin widened, and he glanced around the room before his gaze settled on the half-melted ice from their drinks. "Alright," he said, his eyes gleaming with mischief. "Keefe, I dare you to take off your shirt and let us dump this ice on you."
The room went quiet, the tension palpable as everyone waited for Keefe's reaction. He looked down at the pile of ice cubes, then back at Dex, his own smile a mirror of the challenge. Without a word, he pulled his shirt over his head, revealing his lean, muscular torso. The air grew thick with anticipation, and Sophie couldn't help but feel a rush of warmth at the sight of him, the firelight playing across his skin.
With a roar of laughter and cheers, the others began to dump the ice on him. The cold hit him like a wave, making him gasp and flinch, his body tensing as the cubes melted into his skin. The sound of the ice clattering on the floor mixed with the shrieks of the girls and the howls of the boys. Keefe took it all in still laughing. That's a moment Sophie wished she could paint.
When the last piece of ice had melted away, Keefe grabbed his shirt, his skin glistening with water. "Alright, who's next?" he called out, his voice still filled with the thrill of the dare.
Marella's cheeks turned a deep shade of red as she looked down at her hands. "I'll go," she said, her voice barely above a whisper. "Truth or dare Sophie?"
Sophie took a deep breath, her heart racing. "Truth ," she said, her eyes meeting Marella's.
Marella leaned in, her gaze intense. "Okay," she said, her voice low. "What's the real reason you've been wearing Keefe's jacket so often the last week?"
Sophie felt her cheeks burn, and she looked down at the canvas in her lap, the picture of them at the ice rink staring back at her. "It's just...comfortable," she said, her voice trailing off into a giggle she couldn't quite suppress.
The girls all erupted into laughter, all nodding in understanding, while the boys just exchanged confused glances. Fitz, sitting next to her, leaned in. "What's so funny?" he whispered, his voice low.
Sophie took a deep breath, trying to compose herself. "It's just...the jacket," she said, her voice shaky with giggles . "It's nothing."
But Keefe wasn't ready to let it go. He leaned in, his eyes gleaming with mischief. "Fitz, truth or dare?" he asked, his voice a challenge.
Fitz's eyes narrowed slightly, and he took a moment to consider before saying, "Truth."
Keefe leaned in closer, the playfulness in his eyes turning serious. "Do you still have feelings for Sophie?" he asked, his voice casual, but his gaze unwavering.
Fitz's eyes flickered to hers before returning to Keefe's. "It's complicated," he said, his voice tight.
Keefe's smile was cool, his gaze unrelenting. "It doesn't have to be," he said, his tone unyielding. "Just tell the truth."
Fitz took a deep breath, his eyes never leaving Keefe's. "Okay," he said, his voice steady. "Yes, I still have feelings for her. But she's happy with you, and I respect that."
Keefe's smile didn't waver, but something in his eyes shifted, a hint of doubt or perhaps a challenge. "We're just friends," he said, his voice firm.
Sophie nodded in agreement, her own voice a bit too loud. "Yeah," she said, her cheeks still flushed. "We're just really good friends."
Dex and Biana groaned in unison, their faces a picture of feigned disappointment. "Fine," Dex said, rolling his eyes. "Keep your secrets."
