"Holy crap! I don't want to die!" I took an involuntary step back. The step caused a gust of wind to billow. Hair which was blown forwards flew into my mouth. I stared right ahead and did nothing. "Goodness! You've gone mad!"
There was a feral animal in front of me. A ragged-looking lump of disheveled flesh. He was looking ahead. Dull, narrowed eyes opening and closing with his unsteady breath. Despite the weather not being cold enough for it; every breath he exhaled was a cloud of sinister white steam.
I put my hand to my chin. I was trembling, and though I did not feel it– my muscles constricted from the sight of this wolf.

"I BEG YOUR PARDON?" My hand pressed to my chest, head leaned nearer to her, my eyes no longer remembered to blink.

"Your lifelong companion, yes." She blinked, "I see you are quite pleased with these circumstances. Yes?"

A searing sensation. It felt like pebbles hitting my skin, but unlike that of a pebble this was more like an aggressive tap on my calf.
Then– there was that poke. The muscle in my mesoderm was greeted with a distinctly foreign force. As if someone had stuck a blade beneath my skin. I lowered my gaze and I saw a claw pierced through my lower leg.

I lay on the dirty corner curled up and wishing I were not awake but unconscious instead. The thick metallic scent of blood permeated throughout the air. It drifted into my nostrils. I choked on the unsightliness of the smell. Viscous liquid pooled around my entire person. It was sticky, it felt dirty and unpleasant and I found myself wondering what I was to do to properly cleanse myself from this unkempt position I was in.

She watched me while shaking her head. I was confused. What? What sort of person is able to witness the injury of another and be so calm?

"Ah. right– I will leave the task of restraining him to you. As long as you learn the proper way to draw talismans, you will no longer need to face injury."

She turned on her heel and returned to the sky. Clouds converged beneath her steps leading her back into a land of mist-like clouds. She turned back one last time.

"Oh, and there is no need to thank me. All of the good I have done is out of the kindness within my heart."

I watched her leave while I shook my fist at the view of her gradually disappearing silhouette.

Of course I was not alright. Oftentimes the thought of wishing to be dead drifted past my head. That would certainly absolve me of all the obligations I was bound to. That fluttering thought I understood to be a true lie, and yet it was so sweet and alluring all the same.
I shut my eyes. I could see in my mind's eye how it would be if the world were to melt away from my consciousness. My thoughts would fade away. It would be nothing.
