It was the Fourth of July.
Though, it wasn't obvious. There was no chatter of old friends, no smell of hot dogs or hamburgers, no smoke seeping through the air. And the sky was empty.
It was just the two.
Just the two, sitting pressed against each other, on top of sand that still lingered with warmth despite the long gone sun. Just the waves of the ocean, crashing some feet in front of them. Just the warm presence of the beach house behind them.
She felt his shoulder and arm against her own. His body cold, compared to the world around them.
The sun had set. Now the two watched the endless sea in front of them. Neither of them spoke. Only one was capable of it, anyway.
A booming echoe stole her attention. She brought her gaze to the black sky. She wanted to grin, but she couldn't bring herself to.
"Look, Suga. Fireworks."
The boy slowly tilted his head upwards, his eyes glossed over. He smiled. For a few seconds, he smiled.
The girl felt a weight hit her shoulder as his body fell unconscious.
She sat, frozen.
And then she got up, her whole body shaking. Her head was empty as she walked towards the ocean.
She stood just before the shoreline, the waves reaching just before her ankles. Something beneath her feet had caught her attention.
It was a bracelet. A blue and green beaded bracelet.
She slipped it onto her wrist before starting to walk forward again.
The ocean was cold. Cold and rough. The waves thrashed her around as she made one last desperate attempt to feel closer to him.
The loud pops above her didn't stop. The blue and red colors could be seen, reflecting on top of the waters black surface.
The water came over her head. She let it.
She thought of one thing as she felt her consciousness fade.
