Luca's eyes seemed to glaze over as he stared into the past. "We were just kids when our family got involved with the mafia. Leonardo and I were inseparable, but our parents were distant, always busy with their own dealings."
Sofia's heart went out to Luca. She could sense the pain and longing in his voice.
"One day, Leonardo witnessed something he shouldn't have. He saw one of our family's associates committing a murder. And then he was taken away, put into witness protection."
Sofia's eyes widened in shock. "That's terrible. What happened to your parents?"
Luca's expression turned cold. "They were killed in a 'accident' a few months later. I was left alone, with no one to trust."
Sofia's heart ached for Luca. She couldn't imagine what he had gone through.
"But you have me now," Sofia said, her voice soft. "And I'm not going anywhere."
Luca's eyes snapped back to hers, a glimmer of hope in their depths.
