The letter said:

Sir,

Greetings of warmth. I hope the wedded life treats you well. Tell me how it is, if you find yourself a changed man since that day.

Her Majesty called each of us back to the crown city, and I have not seen a mustering this large. I wonder the reason.

You are near to the Queen; she has given you her daughter. If you do not know what for, then I have none else to ask.

I hear that a Hierstag lord comes to visit. Could this be why?

Tell me what you know, as my own wife wishes not to uproot our life to return to the city.

Your brother in arms,

L.

"Right, well, first of all, who is this from?"

"Sir Laernia."

"Laernia? From the midlands?"

"He's from around here, actually. Assigned to the midlands."

Leonore shook the letter in Gabriel's face. "Does he always speak to you like this?"

"That's just what he's like." Gabriel took it from her and pointed. "Here. Her Majesty called each of us to return. I was not called back."

"Then you don't go back."

"This is not some trifling matter, Leonore. Your Queen Mother needs her knights. Why not me? Maybe the correspondence got lost."

"Gabriel. We all know that nothing is trifling when it comes to my mother. Your mail didn't go missing; she didn't send you any."

"I should go."

"No, idiot. Think as to why."

Gabriel's face was blank. Leonore shook her head. "Me. She wants you to stay with me. For whatever reason she needs the others, she thought it was important that I had at least one knight at my disposal."

"But that's a waste of my talents," said Gabriel, utterly sincere.

"Okay, rude," she said, and Gabriel didn't even look apologetic. "In the absence of the Queen Mother, you take orders from me. I command you not to go against Her Majesty's implied order."

Gabriel looked as if she was already searching for a loophole. Leonore continued. "The implied order being, 'Stay right here, Gabriel, with my daughter.' Because she didn't send you a letter telling you to go."

Gabriel turned to look outside the window, resentful. Leonore said, "Stay here and sulk. I am going to survey my land and head into town to speak with a colleague later."
