Garrett

Garrett woke up feeling uneasy. This bothered him because he trusted his instincts. He turned over but stayed, mesmerized by Imani's warmth. While she slept, he gently brushed a strand of hair off her cheek. He valued this woman's life, and his kisses made her lips swell and her skin flush.

He quickly shuffled out from under the comforter and to the window, barefoot. The initial rays of sunlight were just starting to emerge, painting the horizon with a warm, golden hue. Long white shadow plumes fluttered in the breeze, and fog slithered across the lake. In the kitchen, Garrett prepared a feast of egg whites, sausage, hash browns, and toast.

Imani entered the kitchen, smiling in his plaid shirt.

My future wife.

"Did you go to the store?" she asked, her voice sleepy and seductive.

"I did that yesterday."

"You knew I would come here." She teased him, and he smiled.

"We planned this getaway, remember?"

"True, but anything could have prevented us from arriving. Bad weather, Eugene's health getting worse, or Dylan's basketball retreat being called off."

"Fortunately, none of those things happened, baby." They locked eyes, and he winked at her. "We'll stay as long as possible. Live in the moment and have lots of sex because you can't get enough of me."

"Ha. You're so cocky."

He chuckled. "And you love that about me."

And she did. Imani grabbed a hand towel and flung it in his direction. He loved this. They had finally found peace.

They enjoyed breakfast and chatted about unimportant things. Garrett suspected they were both avoiding what they needed to discuss. However, his happiness with the woman he loved caused him to ignore anything that could jeopardize their time together. He told her that Ellie had packed her boots and coat, so they dressed after a quick shower.

Imani stopped pulling on her boots and looked at him curiously. "Do you think it's strange that no one lives here? The owners installed a luxurious shower and garden tub, which is much better than mine."

Garrett buttoned his shirt and kissed her forehead. "Perhaps the family will pass it down to one of their descendants."

"That makes sense."

He quickly draped his backpack over his shoulders and gestured to the door.

"Where are we going?" She gave him a puzzled expression.

"It's a surprise."

Imani smiled as they left in the morning sun on a beautiful October day. They walked through pine, spruce, and fir to the cabins. The scent of pine needles reminded him of hot chocolate, cool weather, and campfires. Garrett noticed the first log cottage, Moonlight Ridge's shiny roof, new windows, and bronze nameplate. He stared at the name for a long time, unaware of the change in his demeanor, until Imani moved to his side.
