Historical background:
Heian Era (794 - 1185 AD)
Heian Era Japan is often regarded as a 'golden age' of art and culture. Writing and literature was a massive movement and every noble was expected to know how to write and read. Oftentimes nobles were judged on their handwriting abilities. In this time period, the power of the emperor waned greatly and the reign of emperors in Japan are ended in 1185. During this time period, the emperor was more often than not a mere figurehead as more influential clans in the nobility took the throne behind closed doors,
kuge = the ancient court in Japan
jūnihitoe = traditional clothing wore by women in the kuge
gagaku = music of the court

You could hear the sounds of festivities from behind your silk screen. It was one of many necessary religious festivals of the year, a concept you were all too-familiar with.
You sigh, eyes tracing the colorful floral patterns on the screen, obscuring the view. The fan in your right hand did little to cool you down, not under the suffocating amount of layers of your jūnihitoe. You were swallowed in the billowing fabric, and the thick layers of makeup caked onto your face surely couldn't be helping.
Stay covered and out of sigh, -- that was all you needed to do, as a member of the kuge.
Your mind drifted to other places, bored out of your mind. Surely-- no one would notice if you slipped away, right? You practically did nothing anyways except look pretty on the side, even if you were a child (albeit one of many)- of the Emperor, it wasn't as if you had anything to do in these kinds of noble settings. There were plenty of women for them to ogle at, so no one should miss you should you decide to go elsewhere.
Besides, something else was your priority at the moment-- or rather, someone else.
So, you stood up, saw adequate reason to leave, and politely excused yourself without anyone knowing.
Sneaking out was fairly easy. Just as you had expected, no one noticed you tip-toeing away-- it was almost too easy.
Once in your chambers, you change into adequate footwear, shedding a decent amount of layers (not that you were at a loss for them). Where you were going, there was hardly any need for modesty nor formalities.
You open the screen door, slipping into one of the many gardens, and exit the large wooden mansion. This was one of the many smaller properties of your father, so getting out was significantly easier this time. Taking a back route, a long winding trail that stopped on the outskirts of the vast forest. You hardly look back, having taken a singular candle as a light source. The many paper lanterns illuminate the sky from the estate, though no light other than yours would follow you. No one would dare enter these trees after you, and you breathe a sigh of relief for getting this far. The sounds of the gagaku slowly fade as you enter the foliage.
