ZANE"Any moment now, the police will arrive to investigate. You took the cup you used but couldn't get rid of it because you were afraid your sister would see you at his house," Raine continued. "Even if you wash and dispose of it, there will still be traces, especially with your future brother-in-law's DNA on it."
"Does that mean he doesn't like John for his sister?" I whispered.
"Younger sister," she corrected.
"I didn't mean for it to happen," he said.
"You poisoned him, but you didn't mean for it to happen?" I asked.
"Yes, I put poison in his drink, but after he told me about the memory stick, I didn't go through with it," he explained. "But he accidentally drank it when I rushed because my sister was about to arrive."
"Why didn't you at least throw it away?" I asked.
"I panicked!" he shouted.
"Did he tell you about the memory stick? Why didn't you follow him?" Raine asked.
"He said he didn't want to see it anymore. He told me to do whatever I wanted with it because it was worth millions," he replied.
"But do you know what's on that thing? Where is it?" Raine cut in sharply.
"Why should I tell you? You already know too much," he replied.
"You could be charged with attempted murder, even if you claim it was an accident," Raine warned. "But, of course, you do have the right to remain silent."
The gun was still aimed at the restrained man as I saw Raine stand up. She turned away and walked off, putting on her gloves.
"Why are you angry with him? Is it because of what happened or because your sister's child didn't survive, and you blame him for it?" Raine asked, opening another room next to the kitchen.
The child died? Was there really no child?
"You don't understand!" the man protested.
"Give me the memory stick. It doesn't belong to you," Raine said, walking back to the man. She grabbed his bound arm and released it from the blue lace.
"Raine, why are you—" I started, but she took a small step back, while I remained in place, still holding the dart gun.
"I only need the USB, sir," Raine continued. "Or if you prefer, I can add theft to your charges. Plus, you might lose some points in heaven."
Her final words amused me. Though I had to suppress a laugh to avoid worsening the situation.
"Why should I give it to you? And how do you know I won't silence you?" he demanded, rising and charging at us.
Before he could move closer, I fired the second dart from Raine's gun, causing him to collapse to the floor.
Raine approached him, kneeling beside him. "Where is the memory stick?" she asked the semi-conscious man. "The memory stick!"
