The only thing in the world that matters, the thing that decides your fate at birth, is what superpowers you get. Some awaken them immediately, like Tess's older brother Tom did. Some develop powers at ages five or six, like Tess's older sister Brooke had. And some don't awaken powers at all. Like Tess. Your powers decide how your life will play out, those gifted with pyrokinesis became either heroes or villains. Those gifted with aquakinesis would become firefighters. Telekinesis, builders. Intelligence, detectives. Flight, transport, speed, police, nothing... Office jobs. Those unlucky enough to develop no powers at all needed somewhere to work. And all that is left is either office jobs or fast food. Even warehouse jobs had been taken over by the telekinesis folk because it suited them.
Tess, however, held a playful determination to do whatever he wanted. He was going to be a hero, where only the lucky were. Only the special ones, who's abilities were abnormally powerful, could become heroes.
Tess could pray for his awakening all he wanted. But he knew it wasn't what was going to shape his future. Powers or not, here he comes.
