"Why didn't you personally give it to me?"

He took out the unopened gift box.

I composed myself: "I caught a cold, I didn't want to infect you."

"Lies." He saw through it at a glance.

"Ah Chen, you're too obvious when you lie."

The man opened the gift, it was a string of Buddhist beads, lying in his palm as fair as jade.

"Ah Chen, I don't believe in Buddhism."

I suppressed the disappointment, pretending it didn't matter: "Is that so, then I'll change it another day."

He wore the Buddhist beads on his wrist, his gaze burning as he looked at me: "But I believe in you."

That unthinkable thought surged to my chest.

People like Bao Jian Zhi often walk on moral risks, wanting to reach high positions, they must give up something.

Like kindness.

I couldn't help asking him: "Why did you save me back then?"

People like him, who have seen everything, would never sacrifice themselves to save someone.

He fiddled with the Buddhist beads: "The look in your eyes when you looked at me was naive, too clean, I couldn't bear to ignore it."

I smiled, a bit bitterly.

"You treat me so well, but I seem unable to repay anything."

Bao Jian Zhi suddenly fell silent, staring at me for several seconds, wanting to say something, but was hindered by something.

"Don't think about how to repay me, just be well, and I'll feel accomplished."

I asked out of curiosity: "What kind of sense of accomplishment?"

"Like raising a son."

Wanting to argue, but it seemed reasonable.

The second day, guests arrived at the house of Bao early in the morning.

I had just come downstairs when I heard a woman's laughter.

"The master of the Bao family, others are called young masters, but you are addressed as master, thirty years old and can't even find a wife, your mind must be all on business."

No one has ever dared to speak to Bao Jian Zhi like this, making me unavoidably curious.

Looking carefully, she was very beautiful, wearing a striking red dress, even though it was still icy outside, it didn't seem to affect her at all.

It was the woman I saw last night.

Bao Jian Zhi doesn't like coffee, he prefers tea, he didn't refute, just quietly sipping tea.

The woman kicked his leg: "Hey, might as well, let's make do with each other."

I immediately stopped the steps I was about to take downstairs, hiding on the second floor, not daring to make a sound.

"I refused." The man said indifferently.

"Why? I'm unmarried, you're unwed, and we're friends since childhood."

I pinched the palm of my hand, waiting for that answer.

Bao Jian Zhi glanced at the person opposite, tugged at his lip: "Can't afford to serve you."

The woman wasn't angry, snorted.

"Don't tell me you really like men, like your nephew."

"Don't blame me for not reminding you, if another person like that comes out of your Bao family, the family line will be cut off, and who will inherit the family property?"

I knew Bao Cong An.

When he announced his boyfriend back then, it was quite sensational, later they went abroad for a wedding together.

Bao Jian Zhi issued an order to leave: "You talk too much, go back now, I won't send you off."

The woman felt her good intentions were not appreciated, stormed off angrily.

"When did you learn to eavesdrop?"

I pursed my lips, went downstairs.

Bao Jian Zhi looked at me: "Her name is Jiang Sui, a playmate from my childhood, I've known her for nearly thirty years."

"She is a good person, just a bit talkative."

"And one more thing, she doesn't like men."

I didn't quite understand why he explained so much.

But Bao Jian Zhi didn't say more, instead urging me to go have breakfast quickly.

7

It was just the two of us at the dining table.

I took a sip of milk, hesitated, and then spoke: "Actually, I also think what she said makes sense, you can—"

Clang!

Bao Jian Zhi looked very calm, his voice cold: "I know what you're going to say, but this is my business."

I suddenly felt I was too presumptuous, and immediately apologized.

From that day on, we seemed to start a strange cold war.

Bao Jian Zhi no longer came to my side, only occasionally sending over warm clothing through his assistant, without a word.

He seemed angry.

But why?

I didn't quite understand, I had no friends, my parents had severed ties with me that year, my world seemed to only know Bao Jian Zhi.

On New Year's Eve, I made dumplings, with Bao Jian Zhi's favorite pork and cabbage filling.

I sent him many messages, all without a response.

As midnight approached, I contacted the assistant to ask where he was.

"Young master, it's so cold, don't come here."

I shook my head: "He probably hasn't had dinner yet, I'll just deliver some dumplings and leave."

Seeing my insistence, the assistant said no more.

He said Bao Jian Zhi was socializing, I thought of my status, and sensibly didn't go up to find him, but found a corner at the door to wait.

I forgot how long it had been, a familiar figure appeared at the door.

But I didn't call him.

Because there was a woman with him, not Jiang Sui, another unfamiliar beautiful woman.

She was holding his hand, the two of them came out together.

It seemed my gaze was too straightforward, Bao Jian Zhi turned his head while standing on the stairs.

I awkwardly crouched down, letting the snow from the trees smash down in clumps.

I don't know how long it had been, their car had long driven far away.

I was nearly frozen stiff while crouching.

The dumplings in my arms had long lost their warmth.

In this icy and snowy place, I didn't even know where the sorrow came from, I simply sat on the ground, opened the thermos.

Behind me, there was the "shasha" sound of footsteps on the snowy ground.

"Weren't these made for me?"

I was so startled that the dumpling I had just picked up fell to the ground.

"You, you didn't leave?"

Bao Jian Zhi was wearing a knee-length black coat, one hand on a cane, a hand in his pocket, his tall and long figure, standing there like a beautiful landscape painting.

I averted my gaze; "Weren't you in the car with her?"

The man reached out with his cane and tapped my head.

"If only you had looked a bit more, you would have known I didn't get on the car, I came straight to find you."

Sigh.

I sighed.

Bao Jian Zhi was too smart.

"Still sitting? Get up, it's cold on the ground."

He pulled me up, touched my hand, and frowned: "Fool, why don't you go in and find me?"

"Afraid to disturb you."

"Then why not wait at home for me?"

I sullenly said: "You ignored me."

"Who told you to upset me that day?"

I was puzzled: "Did I say something wrong?"

Bao Jian Zhi laughed in exasperation, pinched my face hard.

"You're really something."
