As I walked quickly to my bus, I still heard Frankie taunting me. I quickly scanned the aisles for an empty seat. Everyone was staring at me. The short one. The girl who is 4 foot 4 in sixth grade.
After about a minute of searching for a seat, I found one on the back. But of course, the snotty popular kids were back there and didn't let me sit there. All they did was snicker and put their feet on the seat. Those egotistical jerks.
Sigh... I wonder why I even bothered trying to get a seat back there.
I did eventually get a seat next to this girl named Amy. When I asked to sit next to her, she nodded and gave me a slight smile. She was short like me, but she was a ginger with freckles.
We didn't really talk, but she was nice enough to let me in. She just stared out the window, tucking her straight hair behind an ear every so often.
As the school came into sight, I knew that I would have a hard time because I saw eighth graders cursing their heads off. They were dressed in slutty clothes. Ew.
"Laura!"I heard a familiar voice call my name. When I looked out my bus window, I saw that it my best friend, Jane, who I knew since second grade. She was tanner than I remembered and got pink streaks in her hair.
I ran quickly through the crowd of people climing off the bus, but it was fairly easy for me to squeeze through because I was small.
"Hi Jane! How was your summer vacation?" I asked. She smiled, shifting her new Michael Kors bag.
"Great!" She replied. I guess both of us didn't really have anything to say since we haven't kept in touch over the summer. She probably went to Aruba or something. All I did was stay home reading. Fun, right?
I started a conversation by asking her if we had any of the same classes together.
She shook her head, her eyes sad.
"No....." She said. Great. My best friend doesn't have a single class with me? She's the only person I know in this school!
"Ugh. This is terrible! I HATE middle school!" I pouted. Jane patted me on my shoulder, a sympathetic look on her face.
"Don't worry. We still have lunch together," she said, giving me a comforting smile with her glossy lips, which I returned.
Jane adverted her attention to something behind me. She seemed awed. I looked to where she was looking, but I didn't see anything significant. There were so many people... How could I spot anything significant?
"What is it?" I asked her.
"How do you not see him?" She hissed. I gave her a confused look and started to look around for some weird goth dude or something. Nope, I still didn't know what Jane was talking about.
Jane huffed impatiently. "Really, Laura! Do I have to spell it out for you?" she asked. I continued to stare at her blankly. She tossed her black and pink hair and rolled her eyes.
"Super duper hot guy at six o'clock," she whispered, barely moving her mouth. I gave her a look that said everything.
"C'mon, Laura, we're in middle school! You have to get interested in boys! I mean look at him! He's, like, as drool-worthy as Josh Hutcherson."
" I don't need to be interested in boys! I'm only in sixth grade!" I said slightly louder than I expected.
"Just look at him. Just look!" I huffed impatiently but I knew she wouldn't give up. So, I gave in and looked. And then I saw him.
He was not tall, but wasn't short. He had dark brown hair and amazing blue eyes. He was talking to some of his friends and ignored all the girls who tried to flirt with him. I snapped out of my trance and pretended that I couldn't see anything. I told Jane I couldn't see him, but I knew she wouldn't give up. She pulled me through the crowd so I could see him clearer. As we passed by him, both of us didn't wave or say anything.
Once we got away from the crowd, the bell rang and it was time to go to home room. We quickly said goodbye as the swarm of people started coming and we went different ways. I walked up the stairs in the midst of the rush to my home room that was on the second floor. I noticed I was the first one in the room. I noticed a plump teacher who looked like a prune writing her name on the board, 'Ms. Beckk.' When she saw me, she sqinted through her glasses and asked for my name. I replied, "Laura Jones," before cautiously choosing a seat in the back.
I saw a few other kids walk in, and I almost had a heart attack when I saw the guy who Jane showed me this morning. I heard him tell Ms. Beckk his name was Jacob Dash, giving her an award winning smile which she had to return. He sat in a seat in the front of the room.
I saw all of the girls staring at him, including me. I once again snapped out of my trance and focused on the updated schedule Ms. Beckk gave me. I had art 1st period, English 2nd, social studies 3rd, drama 4th, lunch 5th, math sixth, science 7th and health last period. It wasn't the worst schedule. I heard a girl say she had math first period and English second. That would be very boring.
A sudden thought popped in my mind. I wonder what classes Jacob has? I saw him look at me. I looked away quickly, pretending that I didn't see him. What am I doing?
Ms. Beckk told us we could go to our first period class and that she'll see us again for science.
I put my stuff away in my locker, only taking my morning binders with me, and ran down the narrow hallway to art class. I was ignoring the eigth graders teases about belonging in third grade.
When I got to art class, I couldn't help but crinkle my nose at the smell. it smelled like a mix of old paint and... pine needles? The weathered, painted on desks were arranged into tables of four. I found a table where no one else was sitting at, and put my notebook and pencil down, arranging them perfectly. I highly doubted we would do anything special today; it was the first day of school
My art teacher flounced into the room. She had bleached blond hair, an overly made up face, yet she was sporting jeans and a smock streaked with paint. She sat on a nearby table with no students on it.
"Sit wherever you like!" My bubbly art teacher exclaimed to students coming in. A girl with blonde hair, ocean blue eyes and lots of mascara sat down next to me.
The girl turned to me. "Hi! I'm new! My name is Lena, what's your name?" She exclaimed, smiling with perfect straight teeth. How I envy her.
"Laura," I mumbled while doodling on my notebook. She tucked a strand of wavy hair behind her ear.
"I'm from Florida. We moved here over the summer. Why is it so cold here in September?" She whined, tugging on the sleeves of her pink sweatshirt. Wow, she really is a dumb blonde. I just shrugged. I didn't feel like talking.
"I'm in regulars. Are you in regulars?" Lena asked me, taking out a pen and doodling on my notebook with me. I resisted the urge to shove her out of the way.
"No, I'm in honors," I replied, frowning at my demented dog that I attempted to draw. I looked at the old fashioned automobile that she drew. It was amazing.
"Ooh, you're smart! I'm only good at art and orchestra," Lena said, not at all ashamed that she was good at only the not important stuff.
"Do you have any siblings?" She asked, starting to sketch a cat. I nodded.
"I have a little brother," I said, giving up on drawing the dog.
"I have a twin brother! You can meet him! I like you," she rambled. I smiled. Even though she probably isn't the brightest person in the world, I could appreciate her bubbly attitude.
"Jacob! Come sit with us!" Lena exclaimed, gesturing with her manicured hand. She had pink nail polish on. I looked up and I saw the gorgeous boy coming toward us. I nearly fainted in my seat.
