Finally. Out of art class. But, seeing as god isn't smiling on me on this particular day, I have to go to English. Talk about boring.
Well, looking on the bright side, I befriended Jacob and Lena. Lena is a little too outgoing, but I'll grin and bear it. It's better than having no friends at all.
The narrow hallway was enough to make my head spin. There were a gazillion students hurrying to their second period classes, shoving others out of their way without a glance back. Sixth graders, such as myself, were clutching their schedules, avoiding the massive eighth graders.
Clutching my binders that were bigger than me, I looked for the classroom that was crudely inscribed on my cluttered schedule, room 203. I practically glued myself to the wall, praying that I wouldn't get murdered on the first day of school.
This one seventh grader who was walking in front of me stopped out of the blue, leaning against a dull green locker to talk to a greasy haired friend of his. Muttering a small "excuse me," I shoved past them with my skinny arm.
"What's your deal?" I heard the guy's gruff voice yell after me, but I silently glued myself to the wall again.
Finally, I saw a '203' painted on the doorframe of an old, wooden door. sighing in relief, I hurried out of the Hell known as a middle school hallway.
When I walked into the classroom, I saw many posters on the wall, and very messy desk, and a woman who looked about 45 years old. She sat in an old rickety chair, staring at us as we took a seat. Talk about creepy.
Looking around, I saw Jacob sitting down at a desk in the middle of the room. My heart leapt as I saw that the desks were double desks. That means two people per desk.
"Psst! Laura!" I heard a familiar voice call my name from the doorway. I turned and saw Lena looking at me urgently, twisting her straight blond hair a around with her finger. Glancing at my teacher and seeing that she was busy giving a death glare to some student in the back, I hurried to the doorway.
"What is it?" I hissed, my eyes darting back and forth to the Death Eater. I mean my English teacher. Yeah, that's what I meant.
"I have a question. Do you like my brother?" she asked with a slight grin on her face.
My eyes widened a bit. Seriously? I've known this girl for what, forty five minutes and she's asking me if I like her brother? I don't like anyone, I thought to myself, love is overrated. Love is overrated.
"No, why do you ask?" I scoffed while patting the top of my dark hair so I had something to do with my hands.
"Because, I think you caught his eye!" Lena exclaimed, a full smile tugging at her glossy lips. "I have to go to math. See you at lunch!" She skipped out of the door. It's a wonder how she skips with flats on.
Anyway, her information was a lot to take in. Jacob? Possibly liking me? That can't be possible. I mean, a popular kid liking me? I'm basically a mouse, and I prefer to stay that way.
The bell gave a shrill ring, and I realized that I was the only one standing. I saw Jacob motioning fervently to sit next to him.
"Hurry!" Jacob hissed.
I quickly ran over to him, and put my books down on the half of the desk that was available. Sinking into the seat, I thanked my lucky stars that Death Eater didn't kill me yet,.
"Who was that? Who pulled you in the doorway?" Jacob leaned over and whispered in my ear as Death Eater got her bearings. His minty breath tickled me.
"Oh. That was Lena." I replied, trying not to flush.
"What did she want to say to you?" He whispered
I panicked inside. What was I going to tell him? Hey, your sister asked me if I like you. I can't say that! Besides, I also can't say that I scoffed out a mean 'no.'
"She um..... told me that she was going to see me at lunch." I said quickly., fiddling with my binder.
'Okay......" Jacob said with an unsure voice. Shaking his head, he opened a crisp black binder and wrote his name on a piece of looseleaf.
Very awkward moment.
"Attention class! Attention! Quiet down, we are in English class now. Settle down, put your books away, I will explain everything to you. I am Ms. Speckman. I will be teaching you grammar and writing skills this year. You will get daily homework, unless I do not assign anything verbally." Death Eater said very loudly, eyeing each of us through dark, beady eyes.
"Sorry I'm late." said a sugary-sweet voice from the doorway. Everyone turned to see a medium height girl who had more makeup on than Britney Spears has in a year. Her soft auburn hair was in curls.
"Next time do not be late. I am Ms. Speckman. Your name is?" Death Eater prompted, crossing her arms over her faded shirt.
"Ariana Goldwell." She replied, smiling a curt smile with light pink lips.
"Please take a seat in the back, the one in the corner to the left." said Death Eater, with her bony finger pointing to the corner of the room, the only seat available.
As Ariana sashayed to her seat, she slowed down when she saw Jacob. She put on a flirty look and said, "Hey Jacob." in the flirty tone that I hate. Honestly, her attempts to look like the cliché popular girl was futile.
Ariana's smile faded when she saw me sitting next to Jacob.
"Hi." Jacob said casually, not seeming to like her that much.
"Who's she?" She nodded to me, looking at me with an odd stare.
"A friend of mine." Jacob replied shortly.
Ariana continued to her seat, still giving me and Jacob looks. Honestly, those wannabe popular girls always get on my nerves.
"Who is that?" I asked Jacob, glancing at the ginger out of the corner of my eye. She plopped her binders on her desk and sat down, not paying attention to the girl sitting next to her.
"A girl who's liked me since this morning, when apparently I became known as the 'new guy.' Obviously I don't like her back." Jacob replied with a short laugh.
And of course, we payed no mind to Death Eater's lesson.
As we continued on our monotonous first lesson about grammar, I saw Ariana giving Jacob flirty looks and giving me retarded looking death stares. I rolled my eyes. She's trying to be the mean snobby girl in a stupid, cliché book, I am the geeky one who gets picked on, and Jacob is a supposed "crush" who will never like me back and Lena is the friend who supports you and of course, wants to gossip.
But in the books, the geeky girl always "wins" while the mean girl "loses". But I don't think my book will end like that. And besides, I'm not about to go to battle screaming, 'For Narnia!' over a stupid guy. Love is overrated.
I turned around from my pointless doodles to see Jacob staring at me. He looked away quickly as I caught him staring. Pushing his brown hair out of his face, he pretended to become immersed in the lesson.
Even though my mind was against it, my heart leapt a tiny bit when I caught him staring at me. What is up with me?
Soon enough, Death Eater's lesson drew to a halt with the bell ringing. Jacob hefted his back back over his shoulder, and with a slight smile in my direction, he bee-lined out of the room. Weird. Middle school was weird.
A/N: Its done! I hope its not too short. I am thinking about making a chapter from Jacob's POV. This story is sort of like my life except I dont like anyone (and yes I am only 4 foot 4 and I am in sixth grade :3) and there isnt any man girl trying to ruin my life. Thank you for all the positive comments Ive been getting! Please vote, comment ad follow!
