—"They don't know?" Hanni screams, eyes going wide with fear as I gulp and cringe back on the corner of the wall, nervous.
I clear my throat and take a hesitant step forward. "Look—" I start, holding my hands up in defense, "—I was scared, okay?" I try, whimpering at the pathetic sound of my voice.
Hanni snaps her vicious dark eyes on me and glares hard. "And you don't think I'm terrified right now?" she hisses, crossing her arms together.
"I didn't know you were going to propose today!" I say out loud, closing my eyes shut for a second for being so stupid as to say that. Of course, you didn't know she was going to propose, you dumbass.
My fiancé quirks an eyebrow, and I'm mentally slapping myself.
"You did not just say that," she warns with a finger pointed at me.
I shake my head furiously and pout. "I didn't, I was joking, and I—uh, Hanni, please forgive me—they'll understand," I assure her, though I need that assurance more myself.
She scoffs at me. "No, they won't—especially your mother," she hisses, walking around the room with uneasy steps.
She stops and turns to me with a scowl on her face.
"Like—how were they not able to know we've been dating for a year? You freaking moved in with me to St. Louis, Min, how did you explain that?"
I fumble with my fingers nervously and sigh.
"I, I said I wanted to work here and got a job offer?" I respond with chattering teeth, shrugging my shoulders like it wasn't such a big deal. "And they never really asked me who I was in a relationship with, so I never told them," I explain with a few hand gestures to ease the nerves.
"They're going to kill me," Hanni blurts out, smacking her forehead. "I'm going to die, and I just proposed to you today—which, I have to say, Min—" she turns to me with what I think is a comical expression, but really, it's sour. "You're the man in this relationship, yet I went down on one knee."
I grin when I recall the happenings of that morning when I arrived in St. Louis, giggling.
"I was planning to propose—" I hum, tilting my head to the side. "But you did it first, and I forgot how impatient you are." I giggle, bringing up my left hand to see the sparkling ring. I note to myself to give Hanni one also because she deserves it.
"Whatever, going back to the problem," she groans, holding a hand up at me to stop. "Why in the hell didn't you tell me that your parents were visiting today?" she asks me, clucking her tongue.
I sigh and rub my forehead.
"Because I thought today was the perfect time to explain our relationship. They wanted to explore St. Louis, so I told them to come over and I was planning to—"
"Min—why now!?" She cuts me off, pouting. "A year? Seriously? That long?"
I groan and smack my thighs. "I was scared. How many times do I have to tell you that?"
She comes closer to me and narrows her eyes on me.
"You're lucky I asked you to marry me, or I wouldn't be going through with the sexy night I have planned for us," she grunts, making my ears perk up.
"We have a sexy night?" I ask, grinning widely because it's been a long time since Hanni and I had sex, and I kind of miss it. It's a bummer I was in the City packing up.
