As we walked away from the burning building, the acrid smell of smoke stung my nostrils. Victor Lang, a ruthless businessman, had hired me to kill Dr. Hayes. Now, with the building reduced to ashes and Dr. Hayes still alive, I was navigating unfamiliar terrain.
“Why did Victor want you dead?” I asked, breaking the uneasy silence. My gaze remained steady, but my mind raced with questions.
Dr. Hayes’s hands trembled as he spoke. “He was my patient. He trusted me with his illegal activities, thinking our sessions were confidential. I discovered documents proving money laundering, bribery, and murder. I made copies and planned to expose him.”
His voice cracked with frustration. “Those documents are gone, lost in the explosion. But I still have my knowledge and testimony. Victor will make sure I can’t speak out.”
I nodded, keeping my expression neutral. “Looks like you’re stuck with me, Doc. We need to figure out our next move.”
As we trudged along, I pressed, “Do you know where Victor keeps his money?”
Dr. Hayes looked down, anxiety etched on his face. “He mentioned a private vault in one of his properties—a mansion outside the city. He boasted about its security.”
“Top-notch security, got it,” I interrupted, my tone dismissive. “Don’t worry; I’ve never met a security system I couldn’t break.”
Dr. Hayes’s shoulders slumped. “I’m not ready for this. I don’t know if I can handle it.”
I stopped, turning to face him with a piercing stare. “If you’re so afraid, stay here and keep out of my way. I’ll go alone.”
His eyes widened with panic. “No, please! I need to be involved. I want to help.”
After a moment of silent consideration, I nodded curtly. “Fine. Stick close and follow my lead. This is serious. If you can’t handle it, step back.”
Dr. Hayes took a deep breath, his face set with determination. “Alright, I’m in. Let’s get this done.”
Approaching Victor’s mansion, I could feel my pulse quickening. The high walls and dense security loomed like a fortress. The entrance was guarded by an elaborate network of sensors, lasers, and high-tech barriers. A low, ominous hum filled the air, and the sheer intensity of the security system was unlike anything I had ever faced.
Dr. Hayes’s face turned a shade paler. “This is insane. I didn’t realize it was this extreme.”
I studied the formidable defenses, a rare twinge of unease tugging at me. “Neither did I. Victor’s security is more intense than I imagined.”
With the mansion’s daunting defenses ahead, the challenge before us was clear. The real test was about to begin.
