“Hello?” said an unfamiliar voice. I opened my eyes and was astounded to see a man I didn’t recognize.
“Um, hey. Who are you?”
“I’m Tom Wagner. The new owners of this house and you are…?”
“Taylor-Destiny Miller.”
“Oh… you’re the daughter. Come in.” I walked into my house and peered around. Everything looked so different. The old olive green walls were now a light auburn. The scratch in the cherry wood floor was no longer there. Was this even my home? “I know this may seem all a little bit strange to you. It’s too long for me to explain… here’s a letter your family had left for you.” Tom handed me a letter in a white envelope with my name written across the front. I slowly slid my finger under the sealed envelope flap. I pulled out a hand-written letter. I opened it up and it read:
“Dear Taylor,
You’re probably very confused right now; and with good reason. The people living in our house right now are the Wagners. They are tenants of the house. We no longer reside at this address. Here’s the story…
A week after your mom had written the letter, she started to suffer severe depression. We had tried to convince her to go to therapy or talk to her doctors, she refused. On December 1st, 2012, your mother died of a broken heart. A wake or funeral has yet to be held.
Taylor, we’re extremely sorry. I wish there was a way we could contact you sooner. We had moved away because although this house has held many good memories, too many bad memories had weighed everything down. We couldn’t handle living like this anymore.

If I’d only come home sooner. This is all my fault. My mother died because of me. Now I had to find my family, I needed more answers and I realized I’m always running away from someone or something, but this time, I haven’t gotten anywhere.
