By 5 a.m. the next morning, they were on the plane. Monique couldn't leave Penda's side, sitting in her lap and hugging her tightly for the duration of the flight. "I love you, princess," Penda whispered.

"I love you too," Monique replied gently, not breaking her stare.

Monique glanced over to the second seating area and saw her mother fast asleep and out of sight.

plea, "I'm cold, baby." Penda, ever attentive, began to rise. "Let me get up so I can get you a cover, baby," she said, her voice laced with concern. As she moved to grab the blanket, Mo's gaze lingered on her partner's firm, athletic body.
