new job
Starting a new job was never easy, and the fact I had recently graduated college didn't help, I studied my ass off for a PhD from Gotham City University. I had scored a job as a psychologist at Arkham Asylum. I worked my first year being assigned to usual patients, ones who were never as crazy as the patient's my fellow coworkers had. One day I was walking down the hall towards my office with my clipboards in my hand as I heard some guard talking about Batman. They were discussing how the bat had caught another villain.
I pushed my glasses up the bridge of my nose with the tip of my finger. I keep walking down the hall to visit some patients. I sweeped some hair behind my ear as I knocked on the patient's door before entering. Most of my patients aren't excited to see me, there is one that always giggles when she sees me. Apparently she set her mother on fire because the voices told her to.
I truly want to help these people. I believe that maybe if I could connect with them and help them then they could someday have a normal life. Usually I got the patients that no one wanted, or that were hard. I gladly took these patients because I wanted them to have a shot. This lady in particular is wearing a straight jacket, she turns away from the window to look at me, "Doctor Quinzel" she giggles. She's an older lady, her hair gray and crazy.
"Good afternoon, miss Cron" I smile politely and I take a seat at the desk, "come, sit" She waddles over and plops down onto the chair, "i want to ask you some questions, can i do that?"
She smiles and nods frantically. "How are you feeling today?"
"Good! Good."
She rocks back and forth as I ask her more questions and write down some more notes. I believe I am getting through to her, she listens to me and actually willingly answers my questions, other times i have to ask for some reinforcement.
"Have you heard any of the voices since you have started to see me?"
"Not as much. No" she smiles.
I smile back, "that's great" progress.
I finished up with this patient as she was the only one for the day. I go down to my office and put her file in my filing cabinet. I sat down at my desk, I let out a breath, glad I was helping people. I look at the picture of me with my diploma on my desk. I grab my purse and put what I am taking home inside of it. I tidy up my desk before I leave. I make sure to lock the door, it gets scary at night. I look both ways, the light flickering down the hall on my right. I turn and walk down the left, my heels clicking on the tiled floor as I make my way to the exit. I step outside the building groaning at the sight of the heavy rain. I put my purse over my head as I jog through the parking lot and towards my car. I unlock the door and toss my bag onto the passenger seat as I climb into the driver.
I drive through the less crowded city of gotham to my apartment. The streets are never very crowded during the rain.
Walking into my half empty apartment I put my bag down and make some dinner. I adjust my glasses and then check my emails. I noticed one from my boss, requesting to have a meeting with me about getting a new patient. I'm always willing to get a new patient, depending on the difficulty i could get a pay raise.
Anything for a pay raise in this damn economy.
I email her back before I shut my laptop off and get ready for bed. I lay in bed looking up at the ceiling wondering if I will make it in this profession. If I will truly make a change.
Only time will tell.
