Amberpaw may have quick reflexes due to her hunting skills, but unlike you, it's much easier to predict her next moves.
Tensing every fibre in her body, Larkpaw crouched down, her gaze darting over Amberpaw in a flash. She was so focused on figuring out how and when the dark reddish-golden she-cat would launch her next attack that she barely paid attention to her surroundings.
Judging by her previous attempts, Amberpaw would try to deceive Larkpaw again this time by jumping in one direction first, only to immediately change direction again. However, she hesitated for a heartbeat each time, which was enough time for Larkpaw to prepare for the attack.
Then her littermate sped forward, heading to the right. At the same time, her gaze wandered to the left. You are far too predictable. While Amberpaw jumped to the left, Larkpaw ducked and moved in the same direction.
Satisfaction flowed through her as Amberpaw's eyes widened in astonishment. Larkpaw also took advantage of this brief moment of distraction to roll away and immediately get back on her paws.
That's good, Goldenstar whispered in her thoughts. As you can see, Amberpaw is extremely insecure. She only ever relies on what she has done before and what she has been successful with. It doesn't even occur to her that it might not always work so smoothly.
Larkpaw bit her tongue. If only the others knew that she could communicate with a dead cat!
Not a day had passed since the performance of the oath that Goldenstar hadn't infiltrated her thoughts, commenting on and improving her training progress so far. Larkpaw hadn't dreamed about her anymore, and when she asked, Goldenstar only ever said that the time for their next meeting hadn't come yet.
Suddenly Larkpaw noticed a movement in the corner of her eye. Alarmed, she whirled around. Amberpaw had approached her from the left and was now standing on her hind paws, her front paws outstretched to strike.
I'm such a mouse-brain! Why did I forget to watch out for her? Hissing with anger, Larkpaw jumped backwards, the only thing she could think of at that moment.
But then she landed on something hard, heard something crack and the next moment Larkpaw lost her balance in surprise. Losing control of her body, she rolled headfirst over an obstacle she couldn't see and lay there, stunned.
"I've beaten you," Amberpaw mewed triumphantly.
Resigned, Larkpaw looked around for the thing that had caused her to stumble.
It was a branch.
"Seriously?" she murmured with her face in the ground. "It is huge. How could I have missed it?"
Sootfeather trotted over to them, her tail up in the air. "Well done, Amberpaw," she praised warm-heartedly, and the addressed cat averted her eyes in embarrassment. Turning to Larkpaw, the light grey she-cat continued: "You know, since Amberpaw doesn't have enough strength to fight stronger opponents, I taught her that she can use the environment to her own advantage instead."
