"The Lands or Magia were mystical. They're said to hold all kinds of wonders and magic. Legends say that in the past, there were different lands nearby and it was an honor to travel to the mystic lands. People would come from all over and never leave. That was when magic was free to take. Then one day a human from far lands discovered a strange scale. It wasn't a scale from any of the dragons on the island. Being human they grabbed the scale in hopes for riches. Only, they didn't know the power it held. The dragon the scale belonged to had succumbed to dark magic. As soon as the human grabbed it the magic was transferred to them, corrupting them.

"That human rampaged through the lands, killing mercilessly, and over half the population died. A very magical elf realized that the corrupt human wasn't going to stop. So she decided to do something about it. She hunted for a magical stone that was said to hold immense power. Once finding it she harnessed all the power of the island into it. She then realized that having one gem for all the elements was dangerous. So she took eight other magical gems and gave each an element to hold. For each gem, she chose a human to protect it during their lifetime. The elements were the following. Earth, Air, Fire, Water, Animals, Lightning, Ice, and Light. Each protector of the gem had a unique appearance. That was you would know who held the gem. Together the nine of them defeated the corrupt human and restored peace.

"To ensure that an incident like this would never occur again the nine of them made sure the Lands of Magia couldn't be found by any outsiders. The island has had more dangers but the keepers of the Gems always managed to restore order. That was, until the last monster.

"The Keepers managed to defeat the monster but something happened. The gems vanished and so did all the magic. The Keepers searched all over the island and couldn't figure out where the gems went. When the Keepers died the lands hoped that the gems would reappear but they didn't. We can only hope that no monster shows up until the gems are found." The young elves of the village listened to their teacher intently. I missed the young innocent days of childhood when you had no worries or cares. I missed it.

I carefully edged further back onto the branch, careful not to fall. Technically speaking, I was banned from being seen in the village, not banned from the village itself. So as long as I was careful I could come back and watch the village life. This was my only way to get any news about anything. The forest didn't have a gossip circle.

After listening for gossip I always went to the school building. I loved watching the fascination of learning on young eager faces. I loved seeing the potential.

"Florent!" I almost fell off the branch, I looked down and saw that there wasn't anyone there.

"Very funny kid, you know who's talking to you." I bit back a groan and looked at the squirrel on my right. He stood on a branch above, glaring at me.

"How many times have I told you that coming to the village is dangerous? Do you know what they'll do to you when they see you here?" I ignored the squirrel and started heading to the forest. Quickly jumping from branch to branch. The squirrel easily kept up with me.

"Not going to answer me today? I know you can hear me you stubborn elf!" I continued heading into the forest. I hoped that the squirrel would give up and go find some nuts. The stubborn squirrel leaped onto my back and dug its claws into my skin.

"Ow!" I hissed, I grabbed the squirrel and ripped him off. I held him in front of my face and glared at him.

"Kid, what are you doing?" I pretended not to hear him and placed him on the branch.

"Now be a good squirrel and go find some nuts to eat. Let the human be." The squirrel tried to leap again but I grabbed him before I could. Why were squirrels so stubborn? Did they have a death sentence?
