Sweetheart

We all gasped at our new surroundings

We all gasped at our new surroundings.

Gaps of sunlight caused by the immensely high trees, birds singing their tune, critters going along with their day and a fresh humidity in the air.

This was peaceful.

Yet there was an awkward tension in the air. Between myself and a certain boy with black hair that covered one of his green eyes.

After yesterday - no - the past few months, I had no clue how to face him.

First off, I kissed his cheek twice. Even though I have a crush on him, back then I gained a random confidence out of nowhere to do it. But now I can't even talk to Ray knowing I did all that.

Where did I go wrong?? It was only a kiss on the cheek why do I have to make it a big deal??

Yet second of all, said guy was about to end his life yesterday. And I need to have a serious talk about it to him.

The fact Ray even considered doing it is enough to make me feel like I could have done better to help him as his friend.

Sometimes I want to shoot tension in the ribs.

The younger kids seemed to be slowing down and the older kids, including myself were surviving on very few hours of sleep.

"Guys! Let's take a break and eat breakfast!" Emma suggested.

"Yayy!" The little ones celebrated. As did I internally.

Gilda and Emma set down all the food as the kids chattered away.

I turned to Anna. "I haven't forgotten my promise!" I winked at her.

"Hm? Promise?"

"Of doing your hair after we escaped. What do you want me to do with it?" I asked.

I smile appeared on her face. "Twin tails would be great!"

We sat down on the grass, the blonde handed me a comb and two rubber bands. I gently and carefully separated her hair into two, tying it up into twin tails.

"Breakfast's set up! Everyone sit in a circle, let's eat how we used to at the house!" Gilda called everyone over.

"Just in time, what do you think?" I asked the younger girl.

"I can't really see them, due to the lack of mirrors." Anna chuckled, patting the ends of her hair gently. "But they feel great, thanks!" She skipped off to the forming circle of children and bread.

I was about to follow, yet I wanted to be useful at the same time.

"I'll keep watch for now. I'll join you lot later." I said.
